Chronic Nausea: What solutions have you found?

Posted by clutch @clutch, Apr 30, 2021

I am new to this group. I have chronic nausea without any further diagnosis as to cause. More recently, the nausea is harder to control and I have developed
difficulty swallowing. I was turned down by Mayo Clinic when I self-referred. My question is: Has any member(s) in the group been evaluated by Mayo for the same or similar problems? If so, what was your outcome?
Any and all responses are welcomed and very much appreciated.

Thanks for your interest @clutch!
I don't take any prescription meds, but have used several supplements for many years to help with osteoporosis and arthritis mostly.
On the advice of my GP, I cut out all of them to see if my nausea abated. It didn't, but I did discover that I no longer needed some of them so in the end, I'm saving a good bit of money, LOL!
As I mentioned in response to Justin, I did try DIgest Gold but it actually caused more stomach upset. I do occasionally take a Gin Gins hard candy. It occasionally helps ever so slightly, but it isn't reliable or very effective.
Regarding triggers, I have learned to avoid foods higher in fat and fiber as those definitely increase the level of nausea. But avoiding them has not eradicated the nausea and I can still have some pretty difficult times.
I appreciate your questions and welcome your thoughts.

I have used FDgard and it does work. It’s OTC and the best price I have found is on Amazon. There is also another type by the same company for lower digestive issues called IBgard.
Hope this helps

Thanks for this suggestion! I looked at it and it's certainly different than anything I've tried so far so I'll give it a go!

@shelahsegal, I too, have suffered from chronic nausea, so I have lots of experience, unfortunately! Tell me more and what you’ve tried so far, OTC and Rx. What triggers it? Is there a pattern, etc. Maybe I can help.

Most of the time it wakes me up at 3-5 AM. Gets a little better when I stand . Comes and goes. I have 1 or 2 days a month without it. Sometimes it’s just pain in my upper stomach. Phenergan helps a little

I have chronic nausea, am prescribed Zofran, however I use it sparingly due to it causes constipation, so I only use on the worst of days. I can’t use ginger due to I’m on xarelto for history of saddle pulmonary embolism & venous embolism. In the morning I may eat saltine & sip Diet Coke but my gi told me to eat toast in lieu of crackers but I normally just don’t want anything in the morning. Glad to see I’m not alone, but sorry you guys have it too.

I agree that Zofran causes constipation. There are times when I definitely need it. I also asked my doctor for a prescription for Phenergan. It helps with milder nausea.

Hello,
I was prescribed Ondanzatron for nausea while going through cancer treatments and it greatly helped.

Since then I am being treated for migraines and my specialist prescribed me Ondanzatron to take along with my prescription and it helps as well!

If your prescription is causing constipation, try Metamucil 3 times daily!

Really the chronic nausea try to get to the bottom of it. If it’s a side effect of medication you’re taking the maybe you can try a different medicine. Or how you take them.
But also consider like myself, when you’re nauseous. So keep a journal. I found out my pancreas is producing all the enzymes necessary and so I’m always nauseous.
Don’t give up dear!!

Sorry isn’t producing all the enzymes necessary.

I also took Zofran with chemo years ago and it worked very well.
Chemo also caused permanent changes to my GI system- I have learned to adapt.
