Desperate to be free from dependence on Seroquel for sleep

Posted by daddyb60 @daddyb60, May 21, 2021

I suffer from Bipolar 1. Back in 2018 I lost the ability to go to sleep naturally. I was hospitalized twice after being awake for seven days and falling into psychosis as a result. It took 600mg of Seroquel to get me to sleep (which is an off-label use of this antipsychotic.) I have been taking 150-300mg every night since. I am desperate to break this dependence but when I don't take my nightly dose, I don't sleep. The Seroquel has caused me to gain a lot fo weight and I think it actually prevents me from getting into deep sleep. I have tried many of the prescription sleep meds with no success. Can anyone help me find a way to break free? And please don't suggest "Have you tried taking a shower before bed?" Thanks!

I didn’t think of seroquel as having withdrawal symptoms. It’s not a benzo like Xanax, klonopin, adavan, Valium etc. I take 100 mg at bedtime and .25 in the morning with 150 mg of Wellbutrin and I sleep within an hour after taking my bedtime seroquel.

Yes it does have withdrawal symptoms. You do need to taper off this drug, you can’t just stop.

Maybe you’re mixing up an addictive drug compared to routine. I am on it and I never have a craving for it like my benzodiazepines. Maybe it’s just me. Everybody is not affected the same. I’m not going to debate the issue because I won’t change my comment that it isn’t addictive like fentanyl or coke are very addictive

There is nothing to debate. It’s a fact that can be backed up if you care to research. Google can be an excellent resource.

Apparently there are withdrawal symptoms for Seroquel. Upon deeper examination I have found that there could be up to 20 or so side effects from seroquel and they could manifest themselves in a more serious way when withdrawal symptoms are present. I stand corrected although there were references to seroquel not being addictive in some medical journals I checked out and I don’t know why they say it’s addictive and not addictive WebMD and other medical websites are conflicting with each other.
I guess it depends on the dose and how many times per day and the patients ability to tolerate it all figure in as different factors. I could not find a website that said it was addictive. But I will accept you’re comment that they are addictive because you felt or are feeling withdrawal symptoms. I will keep looking as googling things can be conflicting.

Just drop it. I’m not going to beat this thing to death. It’s over. Now leave me alone.

I had a terrible time with Seroquel. One time I passed out on the bathroom floor and banged my head quite badly. Since then, my psychiatrist did some research since I was not responding well to any medications -
sleep was a major issue for me too - and found a town in TX where lithium orotate was found in the drinking water and the residents had very low rates of depression/suicide. He prescribed this for me along with magnesium glycinate (both over-the-Amazon-counter) and after about 3 months (it takes that long to get into your system) I began sleeping much more easily. I take 5m of the lithium orotate and 400m of the magnesium glycinate just before bedtime, read for awhile and fall asleep. I hope you consider trying these and that they will help. Remember to take them regularly at night and be patient while your body builds up enough of a reservoir to make the difference you're hoping for.

Became dependent on ativan (for sleep) after my sister died. The nurse practitioner gave me a prescription for 60 --1mg tabs, with a refill. I soon became dependent on it. Recently went to a detox- a waste of my time. They tapered me off the ativan 1mg in a few days and gave me doxepin 100mg and seroquel 50mg. I'm now dependent on the doxepin and seroquel for sleep, even though they assured me those meds were not habit forming. I want my life back, I want to sleep without meds. I don't want to take an anti-psychotic for sleep and feel like crap every day. Fear developing tardives dyskinesia. How do you withdraw from seroquel??

Me too, and I've only been on it a month. I am very nervous if I don't take it the night before. I have all sorts of body pains and feel horrible. I was given the seroquel detoxing from ativan, but now I depend on the seroquel for sleep. I need help.
