Driving with Numb Feet.

Posted by davidpn @davidpn, Jul 25, 2023

Over the past year the numbness in my feet has increased and at times I find my foot slipping off the brake. I’ve kept my driving to less than 2 miles and this might occur about once per drive.

My license is due for renewal and the medical form filled out three years ago (numbness not as bad) is due to be resubmitted. I can’t lie to doctors and pretend everything is okay but I do have a question.

Can any one recommend a shoe, currently using skechers which has helped with walking, that might help this problem.

Thanks much.

I’m driving with thin sole sneakers and putting the car in neutral at red lights to prevent my foot slipping. My only problem is bumper to bumper traffic which I avoid by staying off highways.

Thanks! I'm not on gabapentin. I'm very cautious about adding anything else to all the drugs I'm already taking.

Gabapentin....argh, yes it helped with the discomfort, but at a cost to my cognition. I finally decided that the pain relief wasn't worth the mental confusion. I'm just coming off of a test of Lyrica...it too helped with the pain, but....it caused me to gain 5 lbs within about a three week period. What was so weird about the weight gain was that my activity level and eating volume and content was unchanged, yet somehow my body put on the weight. Another case of me deciding that the relief wasn't worth the cost.

Very helpful information. Would it be too much to ask the brand name of your hand controls? I’ve been finding out about things in general but little on actual product names. Glad to hear it’s worked out for you.

Thanks.

It’s Viegeldriving equipment.

I keep my foot from slipping on the brake by always wearing my Brooks tennis shoes. I wear socks that have the bottom similar to a hospital sock. I have regular socks that I can turn inside out so the rougher part of the sock is on the insole of the shoe. I never wear any other shoes when driving.

I use Brooks shoes because they have a lot of texture on the bottom. You don't want a smooth sole.

I too have gained about 10 lbs since started the Lyrica 50mg twice a day and 75mg at bedtime. I rarely eat as much as I should. I have been on this amount for approx 10 months not knowing if this is working. Still in question if I should continue

Seems to me that after 10 months you might want to discuss this with your doc.

Thin soled shoes with rubber sole. Also I put car in neutral at red light to allieve my fear of slipping off the brake and causing accident. Shoes can be cheap. I found sneakers at Costco for ten bucks. LOL

Excellent question! I don't have THE answer, but as a fellow with idiopathic PN (no pain, but some numbness in my feet) and who's still driving, I'm always wondering what might be the best driving shoes for me. I'm going to watch and see what others have to say. –Ray (@ray666)
