Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

I am adding 'collagen peptides' hydrolyzed types I & II , 11 grams to my coffee every morning for the last 4 months. I've been doing this on my own as I am no longer able to take any prescribed medicines for osteoporosis due to past side effects. My medical Doctor wants me to try Evenity, and will not comment on collagen peptides for osteoporosis as he says there is no research for the results. However, I found research is mentioned in the following article to support the use of collagen peptides in treatment of osteoporosis: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/collagen-for-osteoporosis. I have a Dexa Scan coming up again in a few weeks, I guess I'll find out. I'll let you know what happens.

Thank you for finding a scientific study on the effects. I may try collagen based on this. Almost completely turned off by reading that McCormick recommends it. I want science based info.

Originally, I was using 'Sports Research Marine Collagen'. But I couldn't tolerate the 'fishy' smell that came through even when I mixed it with coffee, or stronger teas. So, for the last 3 months I have been using 'Live Conscious Grass Fed Bovine Collagen Peptides, Types 1 & III'. I ordered this product on Amazon after reading the following in a MedicalNewsToday article "There are many types of collagens, but type '1' is the most common in bone, tendons, and ligaments". I will let you know what the news is with my Dexa Scan in a week. Good Luck on your journey to good health!

I have been using the Live Conscious since it was called Live Well…the grass fed bovine for several years. My daughter who is a nurse practitioner researched that way back then and we all take it. I take mine in my coffee…no taste or smell…dissolves in hot liquid…..19 amino acids. I order it from their website…the more you buy at one time, the cheaper it is. I’m not a fan of buying health products from Amazon. I don’t use their scoop …probably just half of what they recommend. The amount doesn’t matter on a daily basis after a while.
I can attest to shiny healthy hair, nails like a Rhino and good skin.
I had a Dexascan several years ago….teensy bit better in some areas and the same in other areas. Since I eat healthy, go to Senior gym classes and walk daily, it’s the lifestyle and diet ….wouldn’t consider taking any osteoporosis drugs.
It works for me and, at 82, I feel great. I think this brand is a good choice. My daughter sometimes sprinkles it over salad.

Could you share the collagen peptide product you use? Thank you.

I use Sparkle Wellness Osteo Boost Powder. Good price and has 10,000 mg of Fortibone. The clinical studies used 5,000 mg. You can 1/2 the dose or use 2x/day.

Based on my reading I believe it is important to get vitamin C along with your collagen in building bone health.

When do you have your next DexaScan to see if it helped?

Not until November of next year, so long way to go. I had allergic reaction to Prolia and won't take any other meds. I am willing to try anything Dr McCormick recommends. He's very knowledgeable about bone health and you can check him out on YouTube.

I have my own homeopathic & MD ordered regimine myself. I take vitamins K & B-12, because I am a regular laxative and fiber user. Frequent laxatives use can deplete vitamins K & B-12 synthesized in the large intestine and cause anemia or heart problems. I take vitamins, D3, A, calcium 1200 mg per day, all ordered by my team of physicians. Vitamin E for skin, hair, and nails, vitamins iron and muti-vitamins with iron. I also have hormone therapy estrogen & progesterone for bone and muscle health. Recall that estrogen is the primary component in bone matrix for women. I request by physician an order for a full blood panel and include an Ionized Calcium (check for signs of bone cancer & CA + 125 to check for signs of ovarian cancer, since I take estrogen as a 65 year old woman. I take diclofenac for joint swelling and pain when I need it. I have never smoked, used illegal drugs, no family history of female reproductive or breast cancer or heart disease. However, I am taking a risk, but so do smokers. I'd rather still be walking. I'm an insurance agent and I have really good insurance to support Medicare, so my out of pocket expenses are minimal. However, I'm always looking for new remedies to slow aging and enjoy life. Best, Lynn.

Thank you for the information Lynn.
I was finally ready to take either Tymlos or Forteo as recommended by my doctor. Just found out Tymlos is not covered by my Medicare supplement and Forteo is $1500 a month. I will change my drug plan in December but have not found a plan yet that covers either one adequately? Would you have a suggestion as to how to find one? I am in Southern California.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

This looks promising although iOS a small study. Any feedback on this supplement? It was suggested by The Bone Coach.
