Losing weight due to MAC
I understand that weight loss is part of the MAC experience. I keep losing. I am 5'7'' and weigh 95lbs down from 120 over the two past years. The loss seems to be accelerating. Quite worried and I welcome any suggestions or sharing. Flib

I have been free of MAC for 10 years, due to daily nebulizing and postural drainage. I continue to manage asthma and bronchiectasis. When I started to lose weight, I was happy since I'm overweight, but it went too fast. I tried pancreatic enzymes and stopped losing. I take a supplement with every meal.
This may not help anyone else, but it won't hurt. My Gastro doc says keep doing what works. Same with the pulmonologist. Now I have to use intermittent fasting and Keto diet to lose any weight at all.
That is so wonderful that you are free of MAC for 10 years, May you please share what % do you nebulize and what position do you use for postural drainage? Do you cough and produce mucus every day?
Thank you, My pulmonologist is very pleased and wonders why others fail to follow through on his recommendations. I take 3ml twice a day of both budesenide and brovana, plus nebulized albuterol. I don't know to what percentage that corresponds. The postural drainage is on my right side and drains my left lung. If I'm full of mucous, I use both sides. I don't always get mucous to come out. So far, once a day works, but if I get an infection, extra albuterol and twice a day drainage gets me through it. I use my time to listen to books on tape while draining and coughing and doing genealogy research on line while nebulizing. Your position will depend on which lung has the mucous. There are pictures on You Tube. Good luck.
Yes, this is something that I’ve experienced each time I have had MAC (3x) and I never seem to regain enough - I eat whatever I can get down. Today I am free of MAC (for the moment) and am eating and gained 7 lbs!
Thank you so much. I assume Budesenide and Brovana are for asthma. I don't have asthma but I have bronchiectasis with chronic infection (B. cepecia bacteria). I assume you don't nebulize saline, that's why I asked what %. I produce mucus every day and nebulizing saline makes my lungs and throat very dry. When you do drainage, do you use a pillow to make sure your lungs are lower than you belly?
Unfortunately, I can't keep my lungs lower than my belly, since acid reflux is the cause of my particular asthma and damage. I sleep and drain on a slant and have found no problem bringing up mucous when necessary. Avoiding infections has kept the bronchiectasis under control. That means staying home except for medical appointments and grocery shopping, wearing a mask, and cooperation from my family. No grandchildren visits when they are ill. Can you decrease the amount of saline and use nebulizer more often? Use a humidifier with sterile water or the old fashioned head over steaming bowl to keep lungs moist? Using dry mouth mouthwash helps, too.
How did you get free of Mac? Which. Antibiotics? Thanks Bon
Hi Dgayle
Did you take the antibiotics?
Yes, I was on the Big 3 for 11 months.
Yes. A combination of inhaled arikayce and oral rifampin, azithromyecin, and ethambutol. This combination has worked twice for me.
