Severe Constipation

Posted by klk464 @klk464, Feb 28, 2018

I have had severe constipation for a long time. I drink lots of water and have had almost every test possible done and tried many prescription medications. These medications work for a little bit then stop. I currently take 3 docusate in morning and at night I will take 2 senna/docusate. I still dont have a daily BM. So i get bloated crampy and back pain from this.

I was told I could go to the Mayo Clinic as they may have ideas for me because they are out of options for me here.

Anyone else suffer from this?

I've been taking opioid pain medication for over thirty years now, I have had trouble with constipation as a young man, but after adding in the opioid it's gotten out of hand.Does anyone have any good remedies for constipation, or at least stool softening?I naturally only have a bowel movement once a week, the doctor said some people are like that, but add in rock hard stool, and constipation and you have a great deal of pain to deal with.I think straining on the toilet is what caused my current spinal cord problems, I have two shunts, so I'm not supposed to strain, but I just can't help it, any help will be well appreciated!Thank you.

Thank you for the advice! I live in a small town on the Canadian border, so there's not much of a chance I'll find that, but I can go on Amazon, they seem to have everything! Lol

Have you asked doctor for some medication to treat constipation. They can prescribe some constipation relieving medicine.
I also suffer from chronic constipation, and after watching for various foods, one remedy has come to my rescue
I take milk at night along with some cookies or some sweet thing to eat. I don’t know but it works for me. In the morning I feel bowel movement. It works for me.You will have to check if it’s ok for you to take milk or sweet things. For diabetes sweets are not recommended.
In general too, fluids help in relieving constipation . That said water works miraculously. Never let yourself dehydrated as it will cause your body to absorb water from your bowels, making them harder.

Thank you for the advice!
Water is one thing I know I don't get enough of.
I was in the hospital last year for dehydration.

I took Swiss Kriss for over ten years; 2 per night. It says its natural but has Senna. I am trying to ween off using Miralax but it was not working. I increased to a full cap of Miralax and one Swiss Kriss at night a couple of times a week. Maybe I need to add fiber like Benefiber. Can I put it in with my Miralax? Anyone else take Swiss Kriss? Whole foods or amazon has it.

I also suffer from severe constipation. I have been this way since childhood, and it is only by accident that I found that Australian black licorice helps me to move things right along. I have gone as long as 20 days without a bowel movement, even though I eat lots of fruits, vegetables and grains. For me, the more fiber I eat, the worse I get. I just had a colonoscopy yesterday and they made me prep a week in advance for it. I had to take MiraLAX every day and I couldn’t meet any fruit vegetables, nuts, or seeds. As a result of this, I ended up constipated. On the prep day, after taking all the solutions it took me all night to clean out.
I was a participant in the drug trial for Linzess, which did help somewhat. Just a warning if you do try the licorice, it has a very different taste from what we have here and it can raise you blood pressure.
Best of luck to you & God Bless!
