How to gain weight after H&N Cancer treatment ends?

Posted by blulady @blulady, May 2, 2023

My husband completed H&N Cancer treatment 40 days ago. He has lost about 40lbs and we are trying to fatten him up. Any ideas and suggestions are welcome during this recovery time. Thank you.

Black tongue? That’s totally a new one on me. Has he been to a physician? I would be curious about this such as infection, loss of blood supply, or ? Has he kissed a Brazilian tree toad?

Lol. It’s improving now since scraping tongue with hydrogen peroxide. It’s primarily due to decreased saliva

Wow! Good. That was a new one on me. This healing stuff takes so much time and patience. There are times you just want to pull down the shades and nap for a month in hopes that it will all be better by then. And then it still isn't fully healed.

Hey Blu,
If your husband was assigned to a nutritionist then that person should get him on track with calorie consumption.

If he doesn’t have a nutritionist then discuss it with your oncologist.

If he’s on a feeding tube they have prescribed nutrition.
If prescription is not an option or too much out of pocket expense ask the doctor about an OTC whey protein weight gainer.
This would be a product that give calories but has a high protein count.
The best value I have found is through new world nutritional.
You can get it from 3# to 15# bags. The 15# is around $140 and the 3# is around $45.
Mathematically the 15# is a huge savings.
Also they are the manufacturer and if you compare the intake amounts with other brands you will see why they are the best deal.

I purchased a product for $30 and it was 4 servings! I’m only taking 1/2 so I have a couple more days.
Though I don’t like the product name, I will be ordering the new world nutritional soon!

Hope this helps

Thank you for all this supportive information. He is eating more and a better variety now. We never had an assigned nutritionist and his feeding tube has been out for quite awhile. We do double milk, peanut butter shakes, etc. but he seems to be having a hard time digesting whey protein supplement. Will try again at a later time. He has been gaining 1-2 pounds every 2.5 - 3 weeks or remaining at same weight. Would love to for it to be more, but we have a new appreciation for just how many calories it takes to heal and recover after 3 months of treatment.

Ginger thank you for your response and wonderful suggestions. Some we are already doing and others we will give a try. Spices are a no right now especially because of his throat burn from radiation. We are trying quality but still allowing treats in moderation.

We are in this same boat. Greek yogurt smoothies is what I'm banking on to help.

After my treatments and I was back home this is how I lived and gained some of my weight back. Milkshakes !!! Here's what I did. Buy a blender. Go out and buy BOOST Liquid. And buy BOOST powder. Right by the liquid. Buy Good ice cream not imitation. Buy HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM, in the refrigerator section by the half and half. Nothing fake in this shake. I*n your blender youb put a bottle of Boost and enough powder to equal a bottle. "amount is on the container". Like 7 tablespoons. Then you put in a couple of scoops of ice cream, and enough whipping cream to blend everything together into a nice shake. This is good for you. Boost has lots of vitamins and the rest is healthy stuff. Don't worry about the fat content that's gonna help put weight on you. If you use all vanilla you can blend in any fruit that you want or even some peanut butter or something like that. I had a lot of swallowing problems and this is basically what I ilved on for a year. At least two of these a day. Yes it can be a little expensive but it's worth it. Along with this you can eat anything that you are able to. If I hadn't had my shakes I don't know what I would have done. Best of luck.

Sounds like a familiar path! I lost almost 50lbs in treatment and have been putting on 1-2 pounds per week. One year out and I’ve gained 30 back. What’s worked for me based on limited taste: smoothies with protein, tuna, hard boiled eggs, avocado! It’s been the protein and concentration. Of calories that has worked. Some weeks I limited appetite but I push through with smoothies!

I can’t find my original post about protein powder but I have an update…..

I ordered and received a 33 pound bag of whey protein powder directly from Bongards creamery in Wisconsin.

Yes, 33 pounds is a heavy amount but it was only $217.00 delivered…do the math! Store brands will be double or more!

I transferred into Vittles dog food container and it has like a 2 year shelf life!

I’m also eating Kirkland Organic Greek yogurt for $6.00 for 3 pounds!
Does it taste good? No, but the protein is high in only 2/3 cup! Actually taste a bit better than sour cream.

Hope this helps someone!

This is so smart based on the amount of protein powder needed!
