Post hip replacement problems

Posted by hipgranny1956 @hipgranny1956, Jun 20, 2023

I had hip replacement 6 days ago and the first two days went according to everything I was told but on the third day I tried to walk around and I had excruciating pain in my lower leg down the tibia or shin bone and my knee and the side of my knee was horrible burning pressure tingling just a deep deep ache. I kept trying to walk but it would make me cry out. Went back to orthopedics they did an x-ray and there was no fracture. But they really don't know what's wrong he put me on gabapentin for possible nerve damage somewhere and this is my first day taking it I'm not feeling great on it in fact I feel like I couldn't even get up and try to walk for feeling a little unstable. I just wondered if anyone else had that problem and did it resolve on its own or did they find the right solution? I go back next week for my first visit and I'm praying for some progress as I take these pills and get through the next days of hopefully being a little active.

I had THR yesterday. 24 hours ago. Rough night, but that’s in part because I was so trussed up to IV and those electric sock things to prevent blood clots, that I couldn’t move.felt awful this morning, but had breakfast, pain meds, did hair and makeup (yeppers), and got dressed. Feel optimistic.
I know I just started this journey, but I will post anything significant.

I know this is a random question but did anyone lose their appetite or have a low appetite during the first couple weeks of recovery? That is so not like me! Haha

I certainly did and being thin to begin with I started on some Boost Plus to increase my protein and calorie intake. My appetite is just starting to come back and has been a bit more than 2.5 weeks post surgery . It’s important to have adequate nutrition for healing and bone growth.

I can't do shakes or protein drinks at all. They make me gag and then they make me nauseous if I can get them down. I just have an aversion to those types of things I don't know if it's the texture but... I'm going to get a good multivitamin started tomorrow. I've been out in in all of this pre-surgery stuff I've forgotten to stock up so going to have my daughter get me some tomorrow and get started on those again. I'm finally starting to eat more but I admit that nothing sounds good or taste the same then I'm sure all of that will come back hopefully not full force and then some! I can't afford to gain any weight as I'm soon to be 67 and was having pretty good success keeping it down to maybe 10 lbs over what I should be for my height . Since January after a hard fall on my Left knee I've slowed down after being on a rollator I put on a few pounds. Then while recovering is when the hip problem became worse so I haven't moved around as much as I like for 6 months. Time to get'er done! Haha

Yes - not just me, but my good friend as well. I practically had to hand feed her, and she is typically a 3 meals/2 snacks eater. I think it was a good 3 months before she was eating regularly. My husband just kept forcing smoothies and protein drinks on me.

I wish I could stand fake drinks but I can't tolerate them I don't know if it's the texture but if I can get them down I get nauseous and for some reason I just can't do it. Got to find another way I'm starting to get a little bit of my appetite back unfortunately it's for steaks! Haha want to fixed income and trying to tighten our budget preparing for Christmas but I think I may splurgeon find a sale on steaks cuz I feel like they're good for me at this point in my life and I should treat myself! Don't you agree? I'm getting back on a good multivitamin since I let myself run out right before surgery.

Nerve zaps! Don't worry about electricity. Angry nerves can tingle, zap, burn, ache, buzz... And hip surgery stirs them up from your waist to your toes.

Yes - the nerves definitely get frazzled. I'm almost 2 months since the surgery and I am slowly regaining 'normal' feeling in my operated leg. Sometimes I feel a twitch or tingle, to me that just signifies that the wound area is healing. My doctor warned me that the nerves could take years to recover...but I'm feeling progress already.

I had one knee that took 2 years for the nerves to completely heal after a traumatic injury and surgical repair. As for my hips, the fifth surgery caused a permanent "dead spot" in one thigh - suddenly, there is mild pain there - doc thinks there is a nerve finally waking up - after 11 years!
Nerves are amazing.

I’m 8 days out from my hip replacement. I think I underestimated the violence of the surgery. My body is angry and with good reason!
Still on full dose of pain killers.
I expect full recovery to take a long time, but hope I can move around better soon.

Hello,
The first 2 weeks were really hard for me, but it started to really get better around the 3rd week. I actually had my hips done 26 days apart. Now I just got done with having both of my knees done. These surgeries are not easy by any means. There's a lot of things happening to your body. Let me just say I'm very glad I did it. Nobody ever tells us about the weird feeling in the thighs after a hip replacement, it really threw me off. But as time goes by the thigh will be back to normal, it took me 18 to 24 months to feel good . I hope for speedy recovery for you.
