Acceptance of out of state insurance
Would the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida accept an out of state insurance ex: medicaid to cover surgery if needed?. Also if needed to come there are any discounts or help with a grant be available to assist in helping family member pay for lodging if had to come for surgery? I am going to see a 3rd back surgeon for my back at a place called Ortho indy here due to damages to my back from a vehicle accident in which I was a passenger of the vehicle that got hit 2 years ago Feb and going to trial lawsuit In bout a few months over it. I just don't want 10-20 years or less go by and a surgery is needed then that could of been done when was trying to get a Dr to perform it after the trial lawsuit is already settled and have to come out of my pocket or a insurance to have to cover it. I live in pain every single day been to physical therapy, had all the injections, had an ablation done on both left and right side of my back, also had a nerve root block done as well and now I have a Spinal Cord Stimulator that doesn't help with the pain like I was hoping it would. I have multiple bulging disc, 1 is bulging/protruding and torn in lower back pain is endless I am on pain meds which I don't wanna have to be the rest of my life, I have countless nights of little sleep due to back and leg pain I also have multiple nerve pingements 1 in very lower back between 2 bones that need to be shaved down actually my pain management dr told me that after reviewing the 2nd set of mri's done and condition has worsened over time because I have to work to pay bills and to survive like everyone else with no help from anyone family is pretty much gone so nobody to help if I needed it financially. People ask me why aint I on disability well I want to work as much as possible to hopefully if I get put on disability that I get a decent amount to try and live but honestly I'm not ready to be forced into disability until I am absolutely unable to be able to function at my job or any job. I'm still in my 40s mid but 40s lol so I'm hoping this 3rd go around will find a dr to help relieve pain mainly in my legs and some in the lower back, i know i wont have 100% pain free in the back but any relief would def help so that I can enjoy doing what I used to be able to do before this accident took place. I have a granddaughter now almost 2 yrs old and its hard to interact like I want to because my body is sore and limited weight restrictions with Spinal cord stimulator in my back. So if the clinic would or able to accept out of state insurance and would be paid in full from the other parties (automobile insurance companies or them theirselves when trial is over and settled). Is it possible for this to happen, a surgery at the mayo clinic otherwise I would have to have it performed and the bill be sent to myself to give to my lawyer to present in court to be paid by them.

Hi @simba2018. So sorry you’re going through this. I have chronic pain as well…
If it helps any, your best bet for insurance questions would be to call account/financial services, or you should be able to find insurance information here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/billing-insurance/insurance/accepted-insurance
Is your doctor recommending another spine surgery, or is that something you’re researching right now?
I can relate to not wanting to be on pain medication if there might be another option. I’m wondering if you’ve ever thought about trying Mayo’s Chronic Pain Rehab program? It’s a different approach—the focus is on retraining your brain so it’s not as primed for pain and learning ways you can manage and improve if on your own without medication. There’s a Chronic Pain group on here you can look into. And I’ve found this post/thread to be useful if you’re curious about the Chronic Pain Program: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/residential-chronic-pain-treatment-programs/
I haven’t personally done it, but my pain management program at home is based on a lot of the same principles and I’ve heard many others were really successful with it. Wishing you all the best.
I've been referred to see another back surgeon to see if by looking at my MRI'S & Xrays if there is anything that they will be willing to do for me since nothing else seems to work. I dont live in FL, used too but had to move back north 6 years ago due to unplanned circumstances that had happened in my life then. I'm looking to move back prolly in a maybe 3 years from now, don't want to move too soon away from my only granddaughter I have right now. But not even sure how to get the Mayo Clinic to review my images if this appointment tomorrow (actually today lol) doesn't go in my favor. Whatever that can be done needs to be done before Oct this year.
I see. If you wanted to see if you could schedule an appointment, either you or your doctor would need to submit an appointment request to Mayo. You could either call and request it on your own (they could probably also answer your insurance question or refer you to the office that would be able to help), submit an online request, or ask one of your doctors to do either of the above: https://www.mayoclinic.org/appointments
Based on the information they have, availability, and whether or not they believe they can help, they'll decide whether or not offer an appointment. Full disclosure: It can feel pretty defeating when an appointment request is declined, as it's happened to me multiple times.
I've done it both ways, with an online request (declined); one from my doctor (granted); and another one from my doctor a few years later (declined). The benefit to me of having my doctor submit the appointment request is he was able to send I think it was a maximum of 50 pages of supporting clinical notes that illustrated my situation. I felt like that made it more compelling, but it's impossible to know what goes on behind the scenes.
Either way, it could be worthwhile to ask and to consider either their Chronic Pain program, or a similar one, if there's one closer to where you live. That approach was really a game changer for me personally. Where do you live now?
Wishing you luck at your appointment today, hope it goes smoothly, the MD is supportive, and you can keep moving forward.
