Is coffee bad for you?

Posted by spider109 @spider109, Jun 16, 2023

I’ve been fighting this Bronchiectasis for over 2 years now, according to Dr.’s negative for MAC. Does coffee contribute to mucus buildup OR is it the caffeine in the coffee that contributes to the mucus buildup. I ❤️ my coffee in the morning. Only 2 cups and would hate to give that up. Will switch to decaffeinated if I had to.

Aah, Spider - it seems like someone is always telling us that what we love is bad for us.
The short answer is - MAYBE. Ugh!
So caffeine is a diuretic, and as such can deplete moisture in our tissues. So it could make mucus thicker. BUT, the good news is you can counteract the effect -easily. Just drink an equal amount of water. It would be more difficult if you said you drank 2 pots of coffee, but just drinking a large glass of water when you wake up, and another between your cups of coffee should offset the drying action.
By the way - drinking extra water throughout the day helps thin mucus so you can move it more easily. It also lubricates joints, and overall makes you healthier.
Now, we're not talking about gulping down gallons (you can OD on water and mess up your electrolytes!) My PCP always said "If you don't need to pee every 3 hours, or urine is dark yellow, drink more water. If you run to the bathroom every hour, or urine is almost invisible, drink less."

By the way, as a lifelong coffee drinker, I switched to decaf because of tremors - not nearly as satisfying!

I love my 2 cups of coffee in the morning too so, I now have 1 cup of decaf (Low Acid) and 1 cup of Reg (Low Acid) and have no issues. I like Sue drink plenty of water to balance everything out. After giving many things up we need to have some pleasures in Life! LOL

I’ve started drinking 1/2 caff. 2-cups in morning. I don’t know what brand has regular that has low acid?

I order mine from Amazon: ALEX'S LOW ACID ORGANIC COFFEE and VitaCup LOW ACID DECAF ORGANIC COFFEE.

Great advice, but unfortunately I am from the "Hi Test" community of coffee drinkers - dark, bitter brew with a shot of real cream. For years I drank it cold-brewed to lower the acid, but unfortunately the steeping process makes it even higher in caffeine - hence not for my tremors. Anything else is so unsatisfying that it just pales...
So I have switched to Chinese Green Tea - much more robust tasting than the Japanese style but still pretty low in caffeine. It gives me that astringent taste on the tongue like a good dark coffee. Just ordered a pound of my favorite (2022 harvest is closing out and 2023 coming in. Turns out every variety tastes different each year and and from each tea master - so I have become quite "bougie" about my morning cuppa.
