MGUS and restless leg syndrome

Posted by roseyd @roseyd, Jun 5, 2023

Was diagnosed with MGUS 2 yrs ago after surgery on my back, I am being followed by oncologist. I suffer from fatigue and bruising. For the last few months I am having severe leg cramps. Dr put me on Gabapentin which helped in the beginning but the only thing that helps now is a heating pad. I saw comments in this group before re: restless leg
syndrome. I’m looking for any recommendations on what works for you. This is happening nightly and cramping is more severe.

Doctor also put me on Gabapentin for nerve pain in my legs haven't had much success with it.

I was diagnosed with ET just about a year ago. Platelets are still just under 600, so I’m only on aspirin at this point, and 70 years old. I’ve long suffered with leg cramps at night. Often up running around the house 6-7 times a night. Sometimes more! This is the first I’ve heard of others with this problem. Bananas and drinking lots of water is of minimum benefit. So I’ll be watching this site for any other ideas to help with this problem.

Hi Arti4,
I was experiencing allot of bad itching before my Et/Jak2 diagnosis and my dermatologist called it Puritis (we were unaware of anything deeper) and prescribed Gabapentin which my wife also has taken for her neuropathy from chemo. It actually worked well and a side benefit was my restless leg syndrome that would keep me up many a night diminished. Now that my itching is under more control seemingly from my Interferon therapy, the RLS comes back about once a week. I take a Gabapentin am hour before bed time and it helps relieve the numbing restlessness and I can sleep. Of course our bodies are all different and very complicated so while this seems to be beneficial in my case, may not be for others, but just wanted to share my experience in case there's a thread of hope for a fellow sufferer out there. May be worthwhile to run it by your Dr's. Blessings all!

Whenever my restless leg syndrome flares, I take 200 mg of magnesium daily with food for a few days. Works well for me. I follow this site as I was diagnosed with MGUS a year ago. My numbers are stable so far. I find this site very helpful.

I have tried magnesium but it gives me severe heartburn. I started taking it after my back surgery along with a lot of other meds which I know longer take. I need to give it another try. Seeing my primary next week and will discuss with her. Thanks for your input.

Try taking it with plenty of food in your stomach. Don't ever take it on an empty stomach.

You might want to try Magnesium Glycinate. Much kinder on the guts and easily absorbed in the system.
I buy Pure Encapsulations brand. I had to take large amounts of Mag after my bone marrow transplant. One of the meds I was on would deplete it from my system quickly. Other forms of magnesium really messed up my tummy and caused nasty surprises. 😳 So I checked with my team pharmacist and he okayed the Mag Glycinate. 4 years later, I still take 1 capsule daily by choice. I sleep well and it appears to be helping with bone density along with vit D and calcium supplements. My husband had restless leg syndrome and finally took my nagging suggestion to “Just give it a try!” and now he’s a daily user. It did help him. I hope you find relief.
