Symptoms after a TCAR procedure to clear a blocked carotid artery

Posted by hahnco @hahnco, May 25, 2023

After the TCAR, I began to experience memory loss while speaking. I can not remember even common words which causes me to delay my thoughts and stop speaking. Have discussed with my cardiologist and vascular surgeon. They suspect a stroke or maybe a bleed in my brain ? I’m scheduled for an MRI to give us answers.

This is my choice also. I am having a tough time making the decision to have the procedure or continue on medication and monitor yearly. Please help in things to consider.

I wish you well; I am so sorry this is happening to you. Would you do the carotid surgical procedure given the choice again. What was your blockage percentage when you did it?

REPLY

My left carotid artery was 95-99 % blocked. The right is 50-55%.
Yes, I would recommend a TCAR to anyone with a similar diagnosis. It is less invasive requiring minimal anesthetic, especially for older patients. I’m 83.

I have an 80 percent on left and 60 percent on right side. My age is 66, so I’m just trying to decide whether to do the T car now or monitor with yearly CT scans. I guess the arteries in the back of my neck are fine and my heart is good, so, even with the complications you’ve experienced after having had it you recommend doing it??

Did you have both sides done or just the left side?

Also, where are your symptoms right away after having the procedure or were they delayed? Do you think they were a result of the procedure? Let me know how your MRI comes out. Thank you so much for discussing this with me. I’ve been at a loss.

Symptoms within a day or two after procedure, I think? Hard to pinpoint. I have a pacemaker. It requires going through a 2 to 3 week protocol prior to having the MRI. Still waiting for and date. Will let you know. The good news is my blockage is clear and blood flow back to normal. Hope you’ll be OK?

Just left, 50% on right is tolerable but we’ll keep an eye on it.

With 60 & 80 I think my surgeon would advise waiting and watching with bi-annual Ct-scans.

At what point do they get serious about surgery or when it becomes more dangerous?
