Does anyone have experience with Mirtazapine?
My husband has trouble staying asleep, and falling back to sleep when he awakens during the night. It concerns him, but we wouldn't say that he is depressed. He had heard about Mirtazapine for sleeping. His doctor prescribed 15 mg. Has anyone had side effects, or depression while taking Mirapine? Is it more for depression, than for sleeping? Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, I been on remeron for 7 years. It was great for sleeping and appetite stimulate it work wonders. It is good for depression also but not just for that, but many things anxiety and nausea also
I also is tapering off klonopin I'm not sure how long you been on it but I was on 2mg for 10 years. And I'm down to .5mg and I tried .25mg and the 2nd day I was sick and anxious how did you get off if you don't mind sharing?
Lucky you.
However, if you read the various comments here and user reviews, results vary by person -- from most positive to most negative. My access to quality care is limited and slow. With psych meds just trying can be risky. I am already taking 16-17 meds, I have multiple conditions so it's practically impossible even for a good specialist to predict interactions, let alone if there is no access to one.
I have taken Ambien for sleep, for years, and have tried several things to get off of it. Recently, a doctor prescribed 7.5 mg Mirtazapine to help with sleep. I took it for only one night only and for the next two days I was sleepy and unsteady on my feet, and ravenously hungry. The side effect of appetite stimulation can be a positive for some people, but I don't need any help in that department. Although I've heard that for some people the sleepiness and dizziness go away after a couple of days, it was just too scary to have such severe side effects. Due to these side effects and other potential ones--constipation and activation of restless leg syndrome, I concluded that this is not a medication I want to take.
I've gotten pressure to get off of Ambien and I don't like being on it. However, it usually works well for me without side effects, while the other medications doctors have had me try have all kinds of side effects and in my case have stopped working after a few weeks. But that's probably another post I should make.
I was prescribed 45 mg Mirtazapine for 2 years. It did allow me to sleep, although that’s not why it was prescribed. It was prescribed for depression and the drug wasn’t helpful to me for that. In addition I put on 20 pounds of unwanted weight.
It is not a “cake walk” coming off of Mirtazapine as I believe someone in this post stated. It was a very slow taper. As soon as I dropped from 45 to 30 mg, almost immediately my body went into a state of not being able to sleep.
It is 10 months later and I am off of the Mirtazapine but I have not been able to get my sleep back in order. I suffer from severe insomnia.
I have completed an 8 week course on CBTI, useful information but hasn’t made a big difference. To list the sleep supplements I take or have tried would fill another paragraph. I have been prescribed sonata, Ambien, temazapam, clonazapam and Xanax. I am at my wits end. Recently I started 1.5 mg vraylar and it has hyped up my insomnia even more. That is a side effect of vraylar.
My question is, if I am taking a med, in this case vraylar, which causes insomnia as a side effect and is something I am already prone to, how do you get around this? Prescription sleep meds aren’t helpful to me. Is this just my fate being on this drug and coming off of Mirtazapine?
i was prescribed it, but after looking up the side effects I decided not to take it. I have so many bad reactions to these psych meds they want to push on me, they've only made things worse. They can be dangerous., some worse than the controlled stuff they're trying to avoid prescribing these days.
My GP switched me to Mirtazapine for depression. What a huge mistake. Almost immediately the violent nightmares started. Within a few days I did not want to go to sleep because I was afraid of the nightmares. Within the week I had suicide ideation. The worst I had ever felt. My only recourse was to go to the ER. My GP did not listen to the urgency of my complaints.
Has your husband had a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea?
I've been on 7.5 mg of Mirtazapine for 2 years along with 3mg of melatonin to improve sleep quality due to chronic pain. Take the melatonin about 1 hour before bedtime to help get to sleep and the Mirtazapine at bedtime. The Mirtazapine helps getting back to sleep quickly after those middle of the night wake-ups for pain/bathroom trips. Lyrica gave me nasty dreams.
Part of the need for this is that my colon was removed 2 years ago, which causes the unusual bathroom trips.
I’m curious as to your comment about the smaller the dose, the more side effects
