Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time
I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

Along with learning in 2021 that I have osteoporosis, I learned I have MGUS & stage 2 CKD. I have no symptoms and while the osteoporosis can be part of MGUS, my nephrologist said the kidney problems aren’t related.
I have hypertension that is now better controlled with medication.
MGUS is a benign plasma cell disorder that I get labs yearly to watch- very rarely it can progress to cancer.
So- I have a small amount of protein in my urine and eGFR in 60s-70s. Hopefully it won’t be something I need to worry about - watching my weight & exercise is key, he said.
I was concerned about Reclast but decided to go ahead and take last November after Evenity was done. ( my nephrologist okayed it).
It didn’t seem to affect my renal function any.
I don’t want to take anything else unless I must- hope this is helpful information.
I am grateful for the information shared here. 💗
I agree!! I feel so horrible for you! I had a similar reaction- mid back spasms so intense I though I was going to be paralyzed- last months and then more months of PT-
Hang in there as it will ultimately get better.
I am seriously considering no additional drug treatment-
@leslie2121 your kidney function is still in the reference range. I don't know why they call it stage 2. I have been in stage 3 for years and my PCP has never even mentioned it and I paid little attention. Unfortunately for unknown reasons my eGRF dipped from mid 50's to 36 last month. Drank a lot and got it up to 41. So I am now stage 3B.
My endo is going to do a 20% dose of Reclast to test how I tolerate it but I consulted McCormick, the author of two books including "Great Bones", and am seeing a second opinion endo after nephrologist (finally!) to see if Evenity is an option. Then a bisphosphonate.
I am amazed you saw a nephrologist with such high GFR's. Noone has referred me while in the 50's and I referred myself once it hit 30's and 40's.
I am reading up on the best kidney diet!
You are smart to do a test dose. Reclast has a warning as you probably know for anyone with CKD. I don’t believe Prolia or Evenity have that associated renal risk.
I’m a retired RN with ICU & renal care experience so I really over-reacted, unfortunately. I also have mild proteinuria that contributes to the Stage 2 diagnosis. Other numbers are right where they should be.
I asked for the nephrology referral mainly to be reassured I guess. I didn’t know gradual decline in renal function is pretty common as we age.
Let me know how your test dose goes, okay?
I had very good results from Evenity.
Also, my nephrologist recommended healthy weight and exercise as main thing in my control- otherwise just live my life!
Oh my gosh!!! You poor thing. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I pray the pain will ease quickly. Yes. Never again. 😢
I am afraid too if side effect
A friend of mine had a Reclast infusion which sent her straight to the hospital. She said that the pain in her body was horrendous and felt like all of her bones were broken, especially in her back. She was never so frightened in her life. The symptoms improved and she was soon fine, but she said she would never take Reclast again. She was later told that if they give you an IV of fluids along with the Reclast, or you drink a lot of water, that the symptoms are less likely to happen. Something like that anyway.
I have significant osteoporosis, and Reclast is definitely off my list of possible medications.
Hydrating protects the kidneys from damage by flushing the drug out- but I don’t think it prevents side effects such as the acute phase reaction or other issues. I hydrated very well, and continued to for 4-5 days afterwards.
So sorry you went through that. How awful. It sounds like a drug that is way too scary for me to take. I am very timid about medicine. But I'm not sure there are any medicines for osteoporosis that are completely safe.
