Been diagnosed with Venous Return: What to expect?

Posted by oma07 @oma07, May 31, 2023

Believe it is something to do with blood circulation and wondering if anybody can suggest or help me with this dilemma? Legs from knees down to feet often look blue, heavy, tingly, painful- hard to find anything much about this problem but apparently no heat should be applied- no heated flooring. Sun on legs cannot do any longer….HELP please!!

I have been diagnosed with venous insufficiency, and my shins are red. In 2014 I had the great saphenous veins cauterized, and that helped. My ankles looked like I had elephantiasis then. That did help for many years, but now I find wearing compression hose(knee) helps keep my feet from swelling. From what the doctor says, my valves which should push the blood back up, are flapping in the breeze!
John has given you some great links. At this point, I try to address what can be corrected and live with the rest. Sometimes, I'm successful. My best💞

Thank you for this info - I have to get back to my family doctor on this subject and no I did not talk to my cardiologist about this problem- I am in a different province right now but will be going back to Ontario next week.

Thanks for the info/ I will be 82 this year-I wear compression sock’s especially when standing for longer periods and walking which I used to love - extremely frustrating and slow

@oma07 I really think that 'frustration' is a subject that needs more attention. It is impossible not to get frustrated with a long-term illness, and yet we need to keep as positive as possible...for ourselves. Sometimes I figure it is OK to 'sit in the frustration'...give yourself permission to feel that. But we can't linger, can we? So we get up like you do, and we do it a bit slower. Wonderful attitude!!💞

I'm sorry you are having that problem and hope it is not chronic. Did you perchance experience Covid prior to the onset? I had an issue with painful lower legs (with heaviness, tingling, burning and if standing longer that a few minutes, unbearable irritation) and kept asking at a Long Covid "zoom" weekly class with our provider Feb 2023 if it had been associated with the Covid virus. The physician answering questions never addressed my question. I think not much was known about long-term symptoms at the time. A month later I read online that long covid might be correlated with "blue leg " syndrome, due to excessive venous pooling. No matter what I did---compression calf hose, thick anti-fatique floor mats, elevating my legs--nothing helped for over 7 months post-covid. About 8 months later, my leg pain and color after standing improved and is now almost back to normal. Here is a link to the article I read: https://www.medpagetoday.com/popmedicine/cultureclinic/105904
