Need information on Laryngopharyngeal Reflux

Posted by ashby1947 @ashby1947, Mar 5, 2022

My ENT doc just diagnosed me with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux, or "silent reflux". I had never heard of it. I thought the only kind of reflux came with heartburn, et. al., that we always hear about. Learn something new everyday! I had been unable to use my voice for 3 weeks. A round of Z-Max has helped that and I now have my voice back. I have post-nasal drip. I have changed from a Neti pot to Navage, and that seems to help. I've just been tested for allergies. He has suggested using Gaviscon, but I'm reluctant because of the possible side effects. My PCP put me on Nexium a while back, but I was nauseated and had diarrhea. This is the first time I've had the throat problems. I would enjoy receiving feedback from any of you who have had experience with this kind of reflux. I hope today is a good day for you! Sue

I'm so sorry I only saw this today. I got slammed with work and wasnt monitoring mayoclinic closely. I don't have sore throat or acid taste. I have a chronic cough and voice hoarseness. I had reflux/heartburn evey evening, especially if I lay flat, like for exercises and at bedtime. Now that I know about LPR, I am much more aware of these things. Esophageal guardian at bedtime, which i follow with about 4 ounces of natueal alkaline water, gives me immediate relief. Better than prilosec which I never liked.
And I do notice more "heartburn " and voice changes after a meal with meat or dairy.
Good luck! I sincerely hope you find something that works for you.

Hi Mistea, thank you so much for your response! The Gaviscon advance only works for about 20 minutes after I take it each time and then I feel the acid taste and sore throat coming back. I’m so scared of getting cancer that it has really effected my daily life and mental health. My father passed away 18 months ago from esophageal cancer. Are your symptoms the same as mine? Once you started the diet how long did it take to feel relief from your symptoms?

Hi michile, have u found any treatment that worked for u? I have bad taste as well, almost all the time, it goes away after eating for about an hour, then it comes back, have seen many doctors but no one helped me cause I don’t have any other symptoms

I have had it for over 12 yrs or more.. first episode lasted months. Coughed so hard I thought I would choke to death . My symptoms were cough, PND, hoarse throat. Plugged ears, I would get globus hystericus where I felt my throat would close. Sometimes the reflux would shoot in my sinus except you don't feel it you just feel the effects of it. I did Prilosec and Zantac both of which I stopped taking 8 yrs ago. Too many dangers . It comes in now occasionally but I have more Gerd now than LPR but it does rear it's ugly head.. the worst is when the acid goes into my eustachian tubes and causes ear pain. I had a mild sore throat the first time but it was from the cough which is from the PND and a tickle in your throat.. I'm so glad I do not have it like I did for almost 2 yrs. It can affect you psychology cause if the symptoms and I got panic attacks because if the throat tightening up. Hope you are good. I worked with a GI doc and she never knew what it was. Be lucky your doctor was smart enough to know. This is usually dx'ed by an ENT...

Hi,
Have you tried Gaviscon Advance from England? It is sold on Amazon and EBay. It has to be the Advance not the regular Gaviscon sold in the US. It has sodium aliginate in it that creates a raft that will stop pepsin and or acid from coming up. It is not a cure just a bandaid but it does provide temporary relief. Also talk to your ENT about hypersensitivity of the nerves. I know that may sound weird but I’m finding out that that may be part of my problem. I’m going to a pharalarengologist on June 9th.

I have LPR. Started with coughing a lot for six months and drs could not figure out why. they put me on antibiotic. Then, found out had Diaphragmatic sliding hiatal hernia. Can't take PPIs or H2 Blockers as I start having fast heartbeat and SIBO and thrush. I have used a lot of Nystatin liquid thrush meds several times, and one day started having pain where the ribs meet in middle and getting bloated under ribs and now my throat is inflamed and rarely pills get caught in my throat, and have lots of mucous. Anything I eat causes pain in middle and sometimes shortness of breath. I am supposed to have a procedure done called Endoflip to check for esophagus and LES to see if LES is loose which I think it is.
I am told to eat several small meals during day instead of 3-4 big meals, chew food 30 + times, even while eating eggs, don't bend over for 1-2 hour after eating, respect your fullness cues, don't eat four hours prior to sleeping, use a wedge 6-8 inch high while sleeping. Sugar, bread, dairy, oily foods like bacon or fatty meat makes my LPR worse. Berries are good, if you can eat them, walnuts, almonds and pumpkin seed are not good, but rest of nuts okay. Avocados, bone broth, broccoli, olives, extra virgin olive oil, grass fed low fat meat,, whole eggs pasture raised and wild salmon are good, they are anti inflammatory. I gurgle also with warm water and baking soda. Don't use toothpastes made with mint. Brush your teeth, tongue and mouth several times during day with baking soda and water or get a baking soda toothpaste. Always drink warm water. Sip warm water all day. The only thing helped me was Tagamet, but got Sibo, so I stopped it.

Thank you. How many milligrams of melatonin do you take? What is 9n? Does your LES stay closed or open at all times? Thank you.

9n was a typo.. on.. lol. I was taking 2 mg melatonin... I have increased it to 10 mg for sleep as well . But it helps keep the LES closed especially at night... you can start with the lower dose. I stopped taking it for a week when I ran out and my reflux came back. I have GERD and LPR.. believe me most doctors don't even know what LPR is or how to treat it . Hope this helps

Have you been treated for your SIBO? That is really important as that can be the root cause of reflux.
