Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

Yeah the post nasal drip is awful. I'm 13 months in, it never seems to stop. Visiting another ENT later this month, first one simply said vasomotor rhinitis. But since its only coming from my left nostril and started after Covid I won't believe its rhinitis. Maybe it's inflammation in general or my body thinks it's fighting something that isn't there anymore. I'll update here after my visit. Now trying ipratropium bromide nasal spray, it's known to stop/dry out mucus. And I totally feel you, it wears me out as well. Daily life is nothing like before with this

Hey, just wondering how can you tell the PND is only coming from the left nostril? I thought nostrils only played a part in runny noses not PND

It really felt like that. Only I just discovered something new: ENT advised me to start with a daily nasal rinse with a salt/bicarbonate soda/xylitol mixture. And damn, after 4 days 2 huge mucus globs are dislodged from somewhere high up my nose/sinuses and the post nasal drip has stopped. I'm starting to think that the mucus 'balls' were stuck there all along and prevented normal drainage..

That is wonderful news! Going to try a sinus rinse and see if it helps. Cepacol is helping a tiny bit now. This is a very old mouthwash and hard to find. I had to order it on Amazon. I'm so happy for you! Blessings....

I hope it works for you as well! It's really the xylitol in the mixture that makes the difference I think. Rinsing with salt only never did anything for me. Good luck!!

Has anyone had an operation called Fess? General anaesthetic then a scope with surgical end to open up my sinuses which he thinks may be blocked blocked or swollen stopping me able me to blow my noses instead i it’s always a pot nasal drip. When I use all the usual meds and was put ona week of steroid tablets then 6 months of continual steroid nasal spray had to stop as it gave me dreadful depression alternating with panics after a week of stopping back to normal. I don’t know what to expect with op or continue choking on mucous?

Hi everyone, if you haven't done it yet please request your mucus being tested for bacteries. I just did and they discovered Staphylococcus A. So I'm on a 10 day course of antibiotics now. Together with that, my ENT advised me to do nasal rinse with xylitol/bicarbonate soda/salt mixture for a month. I'm on day 4 of the rinse now and two huge thick nasty mucus globs were dislodged from deep down my nose/sinuses. It feels like such a relieve and now I'm convinced that there's more crap up there that needs to get out. Hopefully this will resolve my post nasal drip that started 15 months ago after my (very mild) covid infection. I guess covid messed up something there and hopefully it's all being reversed now by rinsing and antibiotics.

Did you mix your own xylitol/bicarbonate soda/salt mixture or is it something you bought?

I bought it as a mixture in sachets. You need to dissolve one sachet in 240ml warm water. Here are the proportions of mine:

Was it over the counter or did you need a prescription? How did you apply it and did you need to use distilled water?
