Falling asleep eating breakfast, lunch and dinner
I have a 75 year old male friend who falls asleep a few minutes after eating his breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Every. single. time. He’ll sleep for hours so he’s sleeping most of the time. What’s wrong???

Thanks for your input and support.
I’m doing a sleep study on June 13th. Hopefully it will solve the mystery.
Actually, I have done some researching on narcolepsy. The one thing that jumps out at me is the “frozen” body. I have fallen asleep with my hand up holding my coffee, and eating with my hand up holding a fork. But the biggest aha moment was when I realized that I often wake up during the night in my bed, and my arms are up in the air! So, I was sound asleep with my arms up, usually bent at the elbows.
There are several other indicators that could possibly be helpful in determining the diagnosis.
I do have several autoimmune diseases and take medication that typically make me dizzy. I refuse to take any medications that cause drowsiness. That includes the usual ones like Lyrica, Gabapentin, and even regular acetaminophen makes me sleepy.
The one other thing I learned is that narcolepsy is a brain nerve disease. Antidepressants can cause all kinds of trouble. That’s why I am doing the study. Hopefully, I can find a treatment that will agree with my body so I can feel better.
Thank you for the information about Narcolepsy. I have a son who has this problem. When ever we go to an appointment where we have to wait, he is instantly asleep. He has medication to take if he is going to being driving any distance which he tries to avoid as much as possible. He also has Sleep Apnea. He has never been tested for the Narcolepsy, but our physcian said he has never had a patient fall asleep while he was talking to them. I will be very interested in your progress and testing if you feel you can share this information.

I am 78 .after 3 months severe fatigue and sleeping and many tests.I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr and mononuculosis
@hays78
Oh, I am sorry to hear that!
I had that when I was 19. I was bedridden for 6 weeks.
@SusanEllen66 I think that having one or many autoimmune conditions limit my options when taking natural supplements or meds. Never know how I am going to react. But I never expected to find difficulties with psychiatric meds so common such as ssri. Before, that has never be a problem for me. Today is going to be 10 days with this sleepy mind eventhough i stopped the ssri already last thursday. I am still asleep and my brain is not working but in a slow manner. I feel angry about loosing so many days, I dont wake up on time. Yesterday I tried to work writing an article and after finishing it, i slept the whole afternoon till today!!!!! I want this med out of my system and Its taking too long!! doctors should be more alert when dealing with autoinmune patients, before prescribing anything. How do you deal with depression or/and anxiety? Which meds work for you without so severe bad reactions? Thanks

@lorena1egas I have been taking ssri for a long time. I have bi-polar disorder. It also helps with the pain from fibromyalgia.
I have to take it…
This issue with sudden sleep attacks is fairly new and progressing.
Narcolepsy is usually diagnosed when someone is really young. I’m 73, so it’s not really making sense but who knows.
I am 76 years old and was diagnosed with mononucleosis in October
'22 after my complaints of being tired of being tired. It took me 3+ months to feel halfway decent after diagnosis. Even now I still tire quickly and can fall asleep quite easily at anytime of day or night, and I'm finding it difficult to find my words when speaking. My PCP referred me to a sleep study saying it's common to have difficulty with word memory if the quality of sleep isn't as it should be. The study has not yet been scheduled.
My ANA is high but my Rheumatologist has ruled out Lupus, RA, Thyroid problems. I just want to know the source of this constant fatigue so I can address it and return to my life. I've been an active person all my life and have never previously had a lingering health issue.
Tired of being Tired.
One of the symptoms of Mono is extreme fatigue. Also have you been tested for sleep apnea. When I saw my physician I was complaining about my fatigue. I told him, put me in the corner and I will be asleep in 10 minutes. He sent me for the Sleep test, and a man with an oxygen and Cpap machine were at my front door. I ask him why he was there and he told me "your doctor said we had to be here this morning. Your oxygen level dropped to 61% during the night". I have been on the machine and oxygen in the evenings ever since. The test is easy, you just have to sleep. You might ask your doctor about this

So sorry that you are still tired. I know tired too, on and off with some GI autoimmune disease.
If your ANA is high you probably have some autoimmune illness that has not shown itself.
Mono also weakens your immune system and sometimes appears with other illnesses, including autoimmune.
Maybe a consultation with a Rheumatologist? Fatigue apparently is a very common symptom with autoimmune illnesses.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Did your Doc say both the previous mono and the sleep apnea were causing your fatigue? How long have you been on the CPAP and how do you feel now?
Congrats on a solution!
