Resting Tremor

Posted by da69 @da69, May 14, 2023

Not sure where this goes.
Why does my resting tremor disappear when i sleep and as soon as i wake up it starts right back up?
i am only assuming it goes away as i am sleeping as i dont know how i could sleep through a tremor as noticable as mine.
i Do take meds at bed time that make me really tired and i have a mayo appt may 31st.
Thank you

@da69 Do you already have a diagnosis for the resting tremor or is your visit to Mayo Clinic in order to obtain a diagnosis and possible treatment?

Resting tremors in Parkinson disease to tend to lessen or disappear during sleep. Have you already been diagnosed with Parkinson disease?

Tremor Parkinson disease

There are other kinds of resting tremors that are considered “benign resting tremors”. For instance, some tremors are genetic and “run” in families called “familiar tremors” or “essential tremor”.

Essential tremor

Also, there are resting tremors that occur as a side effect of certain medications.

Is your appointment at Mayo Clinic in the neurology department?

My appt is a physc appt because everyone wants to treat me that way.
Its not my meds...even though nothing has helped and my tremor at rest has been going on for over a yr and getting worse.
My right heel drags the ground when i walk and i cant keep up with people when walking.
My tremor slows down if i am performing a task.
I told them i could stay 4 days as my nephew lives 15 min away from rochester.
They said great and they could get test done as needed.
i am back on zoloft i took for over 20yrs after being on numerous meds that did nothing for me.
zoloft isnt helping either...i was treated for depression (which i have )and now they say i have anxiety that i never had in my life.
i will accept and do whatever they say...i just want a answer.
good or bad.

@da69 So you have an appointment set up at the Rochester Mayo Clinic? That’s great. What is physc that you referred to? Physical medicine? Psychiatry?

psychiatry.

When you sleep your whole body rests including your nervous system. You should be thankful it goes away or at least you don’t notice it and can get proper rest. Hope Mayo finds you an answer and that your expectations are met.

@da69 The medical staff is so very thorough at Mayo Clinic. I hope they arrive at a diagnosis and a treatment that will work for you.

I am worried because my appt is for psychiatry and everyone has been treating me as such.
This tremor and other issues have been ongoing and the tremor is getting worse.
I saw a neuroligist and he said it was a essential tremor and prescribed Benztropine and it never helped...Plus my tremor is a resting tremor and i researched it and essential tremor is when you perform a task...Mine are at rest and lessen when i use my hand.
I no doubt have anxiety that started after getting covid....Never had it prior in 53 yrs?
The tremor began about a year ago.
I am just worried they may only look at the mental side of things and not my physical
symptoms.
Like my heel drag...hand and leg tremors...balanance and bladder issues.

You are describing my symptoms EXACTLY. Anxiety and depression are early symptoms. As are dragging your feet and resting tremor. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s after seeing a movement disorder specialist. Good luck.

@da69 It seems from what you wrote that you have many physical symptoms. I hope that the doctor you see at Mayo can sort all that out for you.

By the way, the tremor that you refer to as an essential tremor is actually an "intention tremor". An intention tremor is when you reach for something like a cup and your hand then shows a tremor.

Here is a good website to read on the different types of tremors.
