Popping in throat not neck

Posted by nyctrin @nyctrin, May 9, 2023

So I had this popping in my throat start 2 1/2 weeks before Feb 23 2023. A Cyst came about on the let side of my throat and 2 days later popping occurred on the lower right side of my throat. Feb 23rd, I had surgery to remove the cyst and for four days after surgery there wasn’t any popping.

The popping returned and for the last 3 months the surgeon keeps telling me I’m fine and don’t need any further tests since the surgery was done. I let him know the popping in my throat has caused me pain and still is. It’s caused my tung to feel weird and sometimes go numb on the left or right side of my tung. My neck goes numb when it pops some days and it’s also increased acid reflux since this all started. It has also struck nerves send tingling through my left jaw and low back of my neck.

It pops primarily on the left side where the cyst was removed and right under my jaw. I’ve had to push the ENT surgeon that did the work to get me another CAT scan and now a neurologist appointment after he keeps telling me I’m fine even with all these complications after the surgery. The surgeon talks to me with arrogance and cockiness that I’m fine.

I’m at the point of feeling helpless and waking up everyday not knowing what I’m going to expect with pain or any other complications I’ve had to endure in the last 3 months. If anyone could give me some type of insight on why I’m having such rough popping in the throat, anything ideas would be helpful.

Can you not ask your family doctor to recommend you to a different ent surgeon for a second opinion?

So I’ve seen a second ENT and said give it time when I was at the 2 month mark. I’m looking for another ENT now to see if I can get any answers.

No luck yesterday. The ENT told me he could only refer me back to the same surgeon that isn’t helping my case.

Symptoms have only worsen today with my throat popping out of place on the left side and won’t stay in. Pain is at a 8.5 and clearing my throat now affects the area with the pain.

I’m suppose to see a neurologist tonight (5.11.2023) so I guess hopeful answers.

They released me and apologized for not being able to figure out how to fix the issue and let me walk out while on meds instead of wheeling me out to insure I didn’t fall.

So I’m still with the same situation but taking muscle relaxers and nerve medicine.

So nothing is helping at all at this point. Could this be a clicking larynx that needs surgery or other methods that might need to be done? It’s caused sharp pain after all these months; shooting to my ear canal and to the side of my head like a headache that lasts for 2 seconds.

@nyctrin I found something you may want to look at regarding disc problems in the joint of the jaw. The joint sits right in front of the ear canal. I have had my jaw get out of alignment and bind up the disc (which wears) in the joint and it can pop or click, and on occasion, I have had a sharp pain there. This might be something to see a physical therapist about. My PT has helped align my neck and jaw. I am a cervical spine surgery patient, and also have TOS (thoracic outlet syndrome) which makes one side of my neck too tight and contributes to the jaw misalignment at times.

The hyoid bone sits across the front of the throat and aides in swallowing. It can become misaligned and is just held in place by muscles. It could be involved as well. Are you having any problems with swallowing?

I don’t have issues swallowing but it’s clicks by the hyoid bone. I know the shooting pain is a nerve unfortunately due to enough time of clicking in the throat. The current place in clicking happened 5 days after surgery Feb 23rd. The surgeon just kept telling me I’m fine and didn’t want to further investigate the pain I’ve been going through for the past 3 months.

@nyctrin Do you still have inflammation from your surgery that may be contributing to the clicking? I don't have your experience. I'm a spine surgery patient.

According to them they don’t see anything in CT scans or MRI scans but you can feel the clicking.
