How common is permanent remission?

Posted by alissahe @alissahe, May 13, 2023

Has there been research done to explore the likelihood of permanent remission? The percentage of people with PMR who have a one time occurrence of PMR?

@johnbishop

I've had 2 occurrences of PMR. The first time it took me 3 and half years to taper off of prednisone and the PMR went into remission for 6 years. The second time with PMR, it took me 1 and half years to taper off of prednisone and the PMR went into remission again in 2018. I think lifestyle, diet and exercise play a part in helping to keep PMR in remission. It's just my opinion but I think you always live with the possibility that it will return.

Bummer. Getting old sucks! Just one damn thing after another, isn't it?

Prior to my first PMR flareup I was pretty sedentary and didn't actively exercise but did occasionally play golf and do some limited walking. My weight was always an issue and I struggled with it. The prednisone helped me put on another 25 or so pounds and I was already overweight.

The second time my PMR flared up six years after it went into remission I started eating healthier - no more fast foods, eliminating most of the sugar and added daily exercise to my normal routine. My daily exercise consists of 30 to 45 minutes on an exercise bike along with some stretching and exercises with light weights, nothing to strenuous.

Personally speaking, I'd say extremely rare. However, it can happen. So far it has for my broth-in-law. He's been in remission for approx a year. You will get more help with your question on the PMR forum. Face book.

l just looked up the pmr forum on facebook, and it averages only 1 post a year, and the most recent post was in 2021. No point, in my opinion, to join. Maybe there is another one l haven't discovered yet?
