I also wanted to ask if those people that has complained about infection after surgery did ever receive dental clearance or underwent any thorough dental evaluation before their surgeries?
My mom is contemplating at 75 unit all to have her hip replaced however she has about the same complaints of pain as you did, but she doesn’t have a collapse that you complained about. I’m very scared because I don’t want her to feel worse than she’s feeling now.
Is anyone in this forum about 75 that had hip replacement done in California by Dr. Andrew Brooks?
Hi @zita199 - Welcome to Connect. I am 68 and I have had 2 knee replacements - one in January this year and one two years ago. I didn't have any problem with infection. In fact, I've read that only about 1 in 100 joint replacements (hip or knee) become infected. My orthopedic surgeon at Mayo was scrupulous about avoiding even a chance of infection - for example, I had to quit shaving my legs 2 weeks before surgery and if I had come in with the tiniest knick or cut, he would have postponed until it healed. I also had to do the Hibiclens wash the night before as well as the morning of surgery. And as to dental precautions, I cannot have my teeth cleaned for 6 months after the surgery and from now on, when I do have teeth cleaning appointments, I have to take antibiotics beforehand. Can I ask if your mom is in good health otherwise? I have definitely had friends older than me who had hip replacements and sailed through it. Wishing you and your mom the best!

@debbraw@zita199 My doctor is very similar with his precautions. I would much prefer to have a very cautious doctor than one who was less so. He also does not recommend rehab centers, many of them do not have the cleanliness standards of hospitals and he feels the risk of infection is greater there.
I was 70 when I had my second TKR and despite some real pain for about six weeks, sailed through and do great now. I am so glad I went ahead and did it. My brother-in-law and a friend of ours had hip replacements last year and both were 75 at the time and did great too. If your mom is in reasonably decent shape I think she should do well also, but there are no guarantees. All surgeries come with some risk.

Hi @zita199 - I'm sending a link with an encouraging story about a gentleman who put off hip replacement and ultimately had one at Mayo. https://sharing.mayoclinic.org/2019/03/25/goodbye-to-pain-after-long-delayed-hip-surgery/
If you want her to actually talk to people about the process, you might consider calling your local Council on Aging to see if any of their members might be willing to share their stories. As an alternative, could you get her to read this story? And you might also get clips on You Tube that could make the procedure less intimidating. Is she reasonably tech-savvy?
@zita199 I mentioned this to my sister before, it was her husband who had the THR. They are walkers and he was back walking in an amazingly short amount of time. He does not carry any extra weight so I think that may have helped in his recovery. It really was the best thing he has done for himself.

I am using gabapentin and it helps but my doc wants me to try Cymbalta. I only used it one time and didn't sleep a wink all night. This is not gong to be very helpful if I can't sleep. Anyone else tried it?
Hi @popolopo you may have noticed I moved your post to this existing discussion on hip replacement pain so that you can see what others have done for their pain post hip replacement. Simply click VIEW & REPLY in your email notification to get to your post.
While we wait for others in this discussion to respond, I wanted to introduce you to @jmjlove and @lauren123 as they have both used cymbalta for other reasons and may be able to let you know how their experience with this medication was.
Back to you @popolopo what kind of pain are you currently experiencing and how long are you post-replacement?
