Hi @zita199 - Welcome to Connect. I am 68 and I have had 2 knee replacements - one in January this year and one two years ago. I didn't have any problem with infection. In fact, I've read that only about 1 in 100 joint replacements (hip or knee) become infected. My orthopedic surgeon at Mayo was scrupulous about avoiding even a chance of infection - for example, I had to quit shaving my legs 2 weeks before surgery and if I had come in with the tiniest knick or cut, he would have postponed until it healed. I also had to do the Hibiclens wash the night before as well as the morning of surgery. And as to dental precautions, I cannot have my teeth cleaned for 6 months after the surgery and from now on, when I do have teeth cleaning appointments, I have to take antibiotics beforehand. Can I ask if your mom is in good health otherwise? I have definitely had friends older than me who had hip replacements and sailed through it. Wishing you and your mom the best!

@debbraw @zita199 My doctor is very similar with his precautions. I would much prefer to have a very cautious doctor than one who was less so. He also does not recommend rehab centers, many of them do not have the cleanliness standards of hospitals and he feels the risk of infection is greater there.
I was 70 when I had my second TKR and despite some real pain for about six weeks, sailed through and do great now. I am so glad I went ahead and did it. My brother-in-law and a friend of ours had hip replacements last year and both were 75 at the time and did great too. If your mom is in reasonably decent shape I think she should do well also, but there are no guarantees. All surgeries come with some risk.

Yes she is in good health, besides having emergency appendectomy 3 months ago. She had her teeth repaired 8 month ago and got clearance from dentist who reviewed the work 5 months ago but didnt remember doing it whwe we called to fax ot to Dr. Made me worry of he is just irresppnsiblr or lunatic. I wish I could het her in touch with more people of her age whinhad succesful hip replacement to encourage her. Thank tou very much for reply
