Fiducial markers implant and SpaceOar Gel

Posted by mikewo @mikewo, Mar 24, 2023

Just had my markers put in and my SpaceOar gel inserted. It was a piece of cake so far and no feeling of fullness in the bowel at all. I was expecting to feel it or know it was there but nothing at all.

@jimcinak

I had the SpaceOAR insertion at Mayo Rochester (late Jan 2020). I didn't particularly feel any discomfort during or after.
I live in a small community (about 100,000) and I was surprised to hear from a fellow PCa guy that he was told that SpaceOar is only done quarterly in our community when the two urologists get enough patients and a rep from the SpaceOAR company can come. Since I think these urologists are competent it was surprising to think they had to wait for a company rep to come. May speak to the benefits of getting treatment in a facility that does enough SpaceOAR insertions to not need/want a company rep to be present...

The same doctor at Mayo that did my transprenial biopsy did my markers and Space Oar. After I saw how good he was doing my biopsy with a local I had trust that he could put markers and the Gel in the right place.

Good for you. Did you ring the bell. I just finished my 5 treatments this morning. Onward and upward.

yes I rang the bell but I almost felt like I was cheating after only doing 5 sessions that were a piece of cake. I have had no problems except after the 2nd session I drank my full pot of coffee because after the first session nothing happened. After the 2nd session my bladder did not take kindly to the coffee and had me peeing every 15 minutes it seemed. I cut out the coffee till this week which was two weeks after last session. Very light pickish sort of discharge before a bowel movement for about a week like a wet fart. Feel almost like nothing happened. Good luck to you and hope you have it as easy as I have so far.

Glad to hear that we go in next week

The only downside was the doctor insisted on knocking me out for the gel insertion even though he had done my 30 core TP biopsy and knew I didn't even flinch once. He was worried that I would move during the procedure.

After getting my gold fiducials last week, it was time for the SpaceOAR yesterday. It took a total of about 30 minutes from when I walked into the room at the urology clinic before I walked out. I was prepped by the sonography operator before the doc and the Boston Scientific observer came in for the actual procedure. It was done under local anesthetic with only mild discomfort primarily from the positioning of the sonograph. We were all conversing about sports and other topics throughout the procedure. They all seemed very happy with the results with the observer even pronouncing it “perfect”. Later yesterday and this morning there is some mild achiness in the area, but no bleeding or other complications. All in all, I deem it to be a small price to pay for protection during my upcoming radiation sessions.

So pissed that my urologist had me knocked out for the same procedure when he knew I was fine with him when he did my 30 core TP biopsy with no problem at all. I didn't even flinch once.
