Hi, I had my hip replaced 2 years ago following a failed open reduction/internal fixation. I started having thigh pain like you describe alnost immediately after the THR. I have had x-rays, ultrasound and CT scan, and the only thing discovered was quadriceps strain and bursitis. I just had injection of the area of bursitis... which did seem to help a bit but not a great deal. My physio suggested that my replaced hip could have loosened. I am on Lyrica. Although this helped a lot in the beginning, it seems to be wearing off. Am off tomorrow for a 2nd surgical opinion. Can't go through life feeling like im being impaled when going up and down stairs. I wish you well. Hope you get sone answers. I know it's terribly frustrating to feel like you aren't getting the answers you need.
My name is Beryl....I have noticed there are 102 posts all about more or less the same thing ....sharp pain in the thigh after hip replacement and after investigation seems to be nothing wrong .....start to get together and find out why, you all have a common denominator ......have you all had the same type of replacement hip would be a good start......???
@beryl is right,, I have not questioned any one on the type of hip replacement they have had,, but maybe we can come up with a common thread here,, mine was a metal implant Cemented,, Bone scan said there was "loosening",, which Lioness feels there cannot be any loosening>> I have had 2 xrays, Bone scan, and an MRI and blood work to check for infection after the surgery.. The surgeon has said all was fine,, but he refused to look at the bone scan,, because he did not order it.. (wow).. When he discussed the MRI with,, he said nothing was found. I asked for a copy and put it in my purse and just read it recently,, there is 3 different tendon tears. Well could this be the pain I am having?? being as he didnt discuss this with me,, I dont know,, but I dont think I trust him any more.. Can anyone tell me what kind of info I need about the implant itself,, so I have it on hand incase of a recall .. I am guessing Manufacturer of course,, but are there numbers,, types?? and so forth?? thanks

@frister Did you not get a card explaining the various parts and serial numbers of the implant? I got mine on the day of discharge. I think mine might be uncemented but would have to check the card...put it somewhere safe and can't find it. I think you should be able to get the info from the surgeon. I have had cellulitis twice, which apparently makes you more susceptible to further episodes. I was also informed that any skin puncture can be a source of infection. The surgeon I saw yesterday said that loosening could also be something to think about. One thing to consider is that when they are cutting through all those muscles, tendons, etc., they may cut something that may not show on our scans. We know our bodies and the way they react...doctors don't. I feel a lot of people are afraid to stand up to their surgeon because they feel intimidated.

Hi this is Lioness I helped the Orthopedic Dr on lots of hip replacements this was in the late 60,s we used titanium replacements not cobalt as I hear now people have said they have terrible body itchiness ,loosening The procedure the Dr used was the implant is put into the femur bone then the hip ball where needed we never had any problems of loosened hip or body itchiness Before surgery find out what the replacement is made of?

Marthaellen, I also read all the posts on hip and knee replacement! My sister who is 70 had her TKR in March, had to be on wheel chair for 3 months because one of the screw shattered one of her bone during surgery! She is so scared now to do the other knee! Could it be the skill of the surgeon that some people have absolutely no problems and some people are worst off before the TKR?

Maybe a good start would be to investigate what the implant , as lioness suggested , is made of and do some research into what problems ,if any, these particular metals have.....Beryl
@marthaellen,, please dont let what you read here deter you from having your surgery... The Surgeon I went to had a great recommendations. and reviews. I know someone that had him do their hip and they are fine.. But I also was # 11 on the schedule for his surgery.. I didnt find that out till they were wheeling me in..ohhhh crap.. why are they doing so many a day.. Hes got to be tired by that time,, . and @beryl.. I went back and read so many of the posts to see if there is a similarity.. but some are Anterior and some are Posterior.. some are cemented and some are not.. but here is what I have learned,( not from what I have read here).. when the surgeons operate they move ligaments, tendons, muscles,,and also cut thru some of this,, Sooo with that being said,, this explains the MRI saying I have tears in the tendons,, and the quad strain.. so what about the nerves,, I am sure there is some damage to the nerves as well,, And @carolg I did not get a card or any info about it at all..but will be looking into it.. Just so tired of being in pain,, and mine is only 8 month,,I cant imagine years of this.. thanks everyone

@frister . Great reply. The card I'm talking about is a wallet size card and tells you whether the prosthesis is cemented or uncemented. It also gives you the product name and serial numbers. It was provided to me by my surgeon. On discharge from the hospital. Hope that helps. The second opinion I had last week told me that I may have had a neuroma develop when they cut through the nerves and muscles. Getting another CT scan done, yipeeee. A little tired of scans now. @marthaellen try not to be too frightened. If you think of all the replacement surgeries done world wide, there aren't really that many failures. I wish you well.

Marthaellen, I also read all the posts on hip and knee replacement! My sister who is 70 had her TKR in March, had to be on wheel chair for 3 months because one of the screw shattered one of her bone during surgery! She is so scared now to do the other knee!
