Diagnosed with PV: Anyone used a home hemoglobin testing kit?

Posted by rmegg @rmegg, Dec 9, 2022

Has anyone found a way to test at home for low hemoglobin with reliable reading?

@rmegg, I don't have any experience with testing for low hemoglobin at home but I think it's a great question. You will notice we added a little to the title so that hopefully other members with experience will see the discussion and share with you. I did find some information that might be of interest on the topic for those of us who are not particularly fond of needles for blood samples.

A new way to track blood hemoglobin levels may be at your fingertipsShare:

Thank you very much.
I think if we can come up with a good home test it would be invaluable. I live at the mercy of my hemoglobin.

I also am living at the mercy of my hemoglobin. Just yesterday I was released from the hospital after receiving 5 units of blood because my hemoglobin level was at a 4.5. Testing at home would be amazing.

I wish I could give you some of mine, my last count was 17.8. I swear I felt like I was going to explode. Can't wait to get rid of another pint in Tues, another week after and week after that if not to 13.

I am very interested if anyone has purchased a home hemoglobin test kit? I have SIBO and allergies which cause fatigue & headaches. Once I get on a regular routine of phlebotomies (recently diagnosed with PV in April, hemo was 17.8 and I was miserable), I'm hoping to get to every couple/few months.

If no feedback, I'll purchase one from Amazon, test before I get my next CBC to see if its correct or very close and let everyone know if you have any interest.

Stay strong everyone 🙏💪❤️

Wendy, I think others like @megg and @jp85 will be interested in what you find out.

This article from Healthline.com compares choices for in home and in-lab testing. Some have tests you can take in your home but send the samples out for analysis. Some products only check for iron or ferritin and don’t give a very accurate result. Read more here:

I would be very interested in that. I can usually tell if my hemoglobin and hemocrit are up by my symptoms.
