Have long haul covid and acid reflux; what are treatments?
I have all my shots and booster but got covid on 1/1/22 - 1/2/22 and then was fine for 2 weeks then long covid symptoms started. They seemed to be going away and then the day after Thanksgiving (2022) I had a severe case of pneumonia and all the covid symptoms (chronic cough fatigue and shortness of breath) came roaring back with a vengeance. 3 weeks later also developed vertigo and hand tremors but those have subsided. Went to PCP, pulmonary, ENT, neurologist and finally thoracic and after a month of tests found I had a small heital hernia and acid reflux. Dr. said could easily be a combination of both GERD and long covid but the surgery to repair the hernia and relieve the GERD would mean I could not longer vomit. Has anyone else suffered with this and what do I do ? From what I have read all I can do is change my diet which will help the GERD but still the fatigue cough shortness of breath have remained.

An allergist may recommend a combination of antihistamines and/histamine stabilizers. Did your doc prescribed anything?
My reflux (GERD) worsened with Covid and afterwards. Covid is brutal if you have a rough case. I take Protonix 20 mg (Prescription) and Gaviscon - 2 tablets before meals (over the counter) if I am having a hard day with reflux.
Also, do not eat anything after 8 pm if you can. Elevate the head of your bed, do not eat large meals, don't wear a tight belt around your waist, lose any extra weight as this makes reflux (GERD) worse and steer clear of real acidic foods and raw onions and foods that trigger a flare up.
My mom had the hiatal hernia repair back in the 80's and it did wonders, but, your doctor is correct in that you cannot vomit anymore. Back then, the surgery was almost unheard of, but, my mom got choked all the time and it was so scary. It was not an easy surgery back then. I am sure it has come a long way.
Best regards and God Bless You!
Thank you for your tips and thank you for the blessing!
I’m only 5 months in and this has become a problem in recent days for me as well. I have had nausea after eating since Covid, especially after meats and dairy food. Now I pretty much eat cereal and bananas because of that. In the past few weeks I have been experiencing GERD-like symptoms at night that now extend into the day, and make me nauseated even with my bland diet. I also occasionally have a pain that stretches across my lower chest area. I can’t take the proton pump inhibitors and have to rely on Tums and diet to control, which is not helping much. I do follow the suggestions above including buying a wedge thing to elevate my head while sleeping. I have developed several vitamin deficiencies that I think may be related. I have yet another doctors appointment in two weeks and I don’t know how to get them to take things seriously. I don’t even know what tests to ask for. The first doctor just said, ‘Yup, sounds like long Covid’ and offered very few ideas or next steps. It’s frustrating, as I’m sure you all know.
My PCP tried inhalers and steroids first but that didn't work so he sent me to the pulonary folks who gave me (yep, you guessed it) inhalers and steroids !! Then a different inhaler. They wanted me to try a 3rd on but it was going to be close to $300 and I said "guys, this isn't working!" So, they put me on a nebulizer, which seemed to work at first but then not so much. So they sent me to the thoracic folks and I did a barium swallow test, manometry, endoscopy and a ph test and they found I had the small heital hernia but when they said my condition could be reflux, long covid OR a combination of the two I was ready to scream. They cannot do anything for the covid and they said I could do the surgery but it wasn't guaranteed. So I asked how long before the hernia got worse and he said 10 or 20 years. I'm 70 so I just kind of laughed and said no to surgery. So I am back a square one. Going to see my PCP on Wednesday and I haven't seen him since mid-January so that should be interesting. Sorry for your problems....they sound much worse then mine because of the nausea. Take care and hope you get answers from somebody !!!
Exactly my symptoms … with the vertigo but now acid reflux .. my diet is totally low histamine natural as I have MCAS ! Developed since long covid! Some days I’m completely exhausted I lay down and sleep for several hours as if I’m in a coma… weird!!!
I too now have a hiatal hernia and my reflux/GERD worsened with COVID. I use Protonix 40 mg and 1 Pepcid AC at night for the reflux. I was only on Protonix 20 mg before Covid. I just had an endoscopy and an esophageal dilation that has helped. I do not eat after 6:30 at night (Except for popcorn!) and I have not had backup reflux in my sleep in over a month. I am so grateful. Covid is such a mystery as it works so differently with so many. Praying for all of you.
