All the questions, before surgery... one week out

Posted by sarah1017 @sarah1017, Apr 1, 2023

Good morning everyone, I am one week away from my surgery date, okay well 10 days 🙂 here are some of my questions..
What did you bring to the hospital with you, was there anything you did not bring you wish you would have?
For those that work how long were you out of work, I am a counselor so I don't do any manual labor.
While healing at home, where there things that made your healing more comfortable? or things you wished you had and did not? Things you found that worked better than others?
Well I think that is all for now, I am sure there will be more as I get closer or as I get answers.
Thank you everyone for your time
Sarah

Hi @sarah1017. Checking in to see how you are doing and find out how your first follow-up appointment went. How do you feel and what are your pain levels like?
Thinking of you and sending a hug.

Well I am perfectly fine, why? Because they canceled my surgery on me at 2pm the Friday before it was supposed to take place. So after I did everything they asked me to do for a year and then starved myself for 2 weeks they canceled….
Thank you for checking in on me, I hope you had better success. Please excuse my bitterness….

Did they get you back on the schedule?! What reason did they have for canceling you? I am so sorry that happened to you!!

Oh no @sarah1017 that is terrible. I’m so sorry that happened to you. That completely and utterly sucks having done everything that was asked of you. I totally understand your bitterness and remember you have us here to vent to and lean on. Did they have a good reason? Did they even give you a reason?

I’m 23 yrs post-op. Take your cellphone charger to the hospital, as well as slippers, if you don’t like the grippy socks the hospital provided. Some people take chapstick.

You should be able to return to work in about a week to ten days,

At home, you may prefer to sleep in a recliner those first few nights. Your tastes tend to change with the surgery. Some people say that protein drinks they lived pre-op, don’t taste as good post-op. So I would have more than one brand of protein powder or shakes on hand. My favorite brands are Fairlife and Premier.

Best wishes to you!

Good luck to you. The best thing you can do post-op is walk. It helps get the painful gas out. As I said in my earlier posts, your tastes may change. For instance, I will only drink ice cold water now. Some prefer it warm or flavored. Cirkuls are popular with some. Just keep sipping!

Thank you again. It really means a lot to be able to talk to someone who’s already been through it. How long were you in the hospital?

I had my surgery 24 years ago. It was done as an open procedure, so I had one very large incision. I was in the hospital for 4-5 days. Yours will be much easier! If you want to talk to more recent patients, there are several bariatric Facebook groups.
