3-year survival rate of those who have had esophagectomies at Mayo

My wife has cancer of esophagus. For past 3 years IU Med Center has been lasered out cancer; however, Barrett's high-grade dysplasia keeps coming back. Trying to decide whether or not to switch to Mayo. I hate to seem morbid, but does anyone know what the 3-year mortality rate is for Mayo? I have heard a lot of good about Mayo

I was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer Dec of 2018 and subsequently had chemo, proton radiation followed by an Ivor Lewis esophagectomy April of 2019 at Mayo Clinic. I am a 4 year survivor since my surgery. Dietary issues are the issues that plague me most often but are manageable if I follow the guidelines for eating, which I don't sometimes.
I don't know what the survival statistics are for Mayo Clinic concerning esophageal cancer, but I would be interested in knowing what they are if anyone has the information. Perhaps the moderators of this site have an answer to that question.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer in January 2020. They said it was too late for surgery?! So they did radiation and then on chemo treatments to the present. I’m doing quite well - regular CT scans show that we are keeping it from getting into the major organs. They tell me that is the best outcome to expect. 3 years and 3 months so far and looking forward to year #4 - Lord willing.

I was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer Dec of 2018 and subsequently had chemo, proton radiation followed by an Ivor Lewis esophagectomy April of 2019 at Mayo Clinic. I was just diagnosed with esophageal cancer and am seeing an oncologist today for a consultation. I live in Knoxville, Tn. and was wondering after hearing all the wonderful and positive comments on the treatment one gets at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota if I could get the same kind of treatment at the Mayo Center in Jacksonville, as I am much closer to that facility.

in Jacksonville, Fl. as I am much closer living in Knoxville, Tn. than I am to Minnesota? I just recently was diagnose with esophogeal cancer and am looking for the best options for treatment.

We went to Rochester for all the initial testing, scans, consults and treatment plan.
We live in Florida.
Started treatment in Jacksonville. They have been equally as professional, knowledgeable and compassionate. Just as in Rochester, the providers take their time explaining and answering any and all questions.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer in January 2020. They said it was too late for surgery?! So they did radiation and then on chemo treatments to the present. I’m doing quite well - regular CT scans show that we are keeping it from getting into the major organs. They tell me that is the best outcome to expect. 3 years and 3 months so far and looking forward to year #4 - Lord willing.

Hello, did you have barrets esophagus before being diagnosed with cancer? If so how long did it take for barrets esophagus to progress? And what symptoms do you have? Prayers your way.🙏🏻

2023 will be my 12th year after my esophagectomy. In 2010 the Proton Beam unit at Mayo in Phoenix was just coming out of the ground. My radiation was done the old way, which is still the most popular method all over the US. In 2012 the Mayo team in Phoenix saved my life even though the Proton Beam unit was not yet operational. This week is my annual testing and procedure at Mayo and I feel great. There is a perception by most humans that a generic name of something means that all available with that name can do the same thing. A Hummer and a Smart car will both get you from point A to point B but the Hummer can easily pull a 5000 lb. trailer and the Smart car cannot. Mayo is absolutely the best-run, most highly skilled, most caring, most capable medical/healthcare organization on our planet!

This is my first post. My 77 year old mother was just diagniosed with esphogus cancer as well as in her tonsil area - not confirmed if related yet.
She had tonsil cancer on left side in 2011 but this seems to be a different type.
However, radiation is not an option since she had previously. We live in Idaho and are seeing her old oncologist at Stanford in two weeks, if not sooner.
If the Proton Beam a form of radiation? Sounds like it but want to confirm.
Appreciate all the information and feeling hopeful after reading so many posts.

I had esophageal cancer treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Florida which included 28 days of radiation and chemo. I used a feeding tube for several months while I could swallow was sips of water. Before that I had 3 chemo treatments followed by scan which showed the tumor in lower esophagul shrunk by 40%. I am now done with treatment as last PET scan showed no cancer in esophagus or local lymph nodes. The side affects where no fun, but I feel really blessed to be done for now. I will be getting PET scan every 3 months for the next year al least. I'm glad you feel hopeful. This is a great group to learn from. Have you had discussion about surgery versus radiation and chemo treatments?

Congratulations on your progress - I know it is a difficult path.
She cannot have radiation due to previous chemo/radiation treatment in 2011
Thursday she is having ultrasound on the tumor and limph area as well as pulmanary exploration due to lung cancer in the late 90's which was removed with surgery, no chemo or radiation
Once these procedures are complete we will be meeting with local Boise oncologist as well as her previous oncologist in CA at Stanford.
We don't think it has spread to limphs or other areas except her tonsil area.
Trying to stay hopeful and stories like yours are helpful. Thank you for sharing
