Are you taking Reclast for osteoporosis?

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Jul 21, 2020

Two years ago I was diagnosed with pretty bad osteoporosis because of the prednisone I was on for my autoimmune disease. I started taking Fosamax (a bisphosphonate) and had no problems. Today, the endocrinologist suggested that I switch to Reclast for 3 yearly infusions. Has anyone else taken this drug? What side effects have you had?
Thanks

I have the same pain from Reclast. It has lasted 6 weeks and I am afraid it won't ever subside. I don't like taking pain pills every day. Sometimes they don't even work. The pain does not subside at night. I have osteoarthritis and am used to pain, but not this constant aching and sudden piercing pain. I hope yours subsides!

I am so sorry that you are having pain. I also do not find relief from pills ! The tylenol takes the edge off but I worry about my liver and the doctor has told me to not take advil because it can harm the kidneys. The pain from the osteoarthritis is severe and does limit my mobility. I am just using my exercycle now and have given up walking because the shoulder joint pain is so severe. My heart goes out to all of you who have pain. Let us continue to share any information about what helps to reduce the pain.
Thank you

I had my first dose of reclast on Monday April 17th. My doctor advised me to be well hydrated. I drank many extra glasses of water for three days prior, on the day of, and for several days after. I also increased my calcium in addition to my D3 & calcium. So far no side effects. I think that I am past the time period for what some spoke of the fever, headache, tummy issues side effects. I'm on the watch for jaw and femur pain. I'm not sure of the timing for that. So, my advice is to keep a container of water with you and drink often. But, LOL, have a bathroom available as you will urinate often.

How many ounces of water did you drink each day? Also how much extra calcium and D?
Docs have told me I should take it.

The medication guide for Reclast states that 2 glasses of liquid are to be consumed a few hours before the infusion to prevent kidney damage. That most likely would be the minimum. This had caught my attention as I have difficulty consuming large quantities of liquid at a time. Luckily they do not specify water as I can drink chocolate milk more easily.

I had a Reclast infusion about 8 years ago with no reaction. Then I moved and my new doctor said that my osteopenia had not progressed. She told me to take at least 2K units of Vitamin D and calcium daily, and to keep walking and hiking. It has been 7 years since I have needed another infusion. This year she told me that there was a small change and that I could get another infusion and that it was up to me. I asked her what she would do because she knows more about this than I do, and she told me that she wouldn't do it! She would just keep doing what I have been doing for now.

I spread the water over the day & night but I probably drank 6 large beer glasses, so a pint??? I took 700 mg Calcium and 1000 units D, two tums, and also drank milk (normally no dairy for me) and added cheese.

I had a kidney stone a few years ago so my doctor told me to only take one calcium pill a day and I take calcium citrate from Sam's Club. Cheers, Judy

I also have lots of back pain. I was diagnosed with early acquired degenerative disk disease at age 32. I have just gotten used to living with it because I'm scared of surgery. I've heard too many stories of people having to go back for more. I did a lot of reading this morning and there was a lot of good information on one of these pages for Boron for Osteo Arthritis and joint pain, so I went online and did some research about it and it is not expensive so I thought I would try it. I ordered it and I'll see how it works. I looked it up on Amazon and they tell you the ones that have the most positive reviews and so we will see. Cheers, Judy

So good that you are researching this information ! Please let us know how you feel and any results from taking Boron. I am open to any information that may help my osteoarthritis since I am not taking anymore bisphosphonates.
Thank you
