Autoimmune Issues and Dental Problems

Posted by lmcfm1 @lmcfm1, Aug 8, 2020

Does anyone know if autoimmune issues can be related to dental bone loss, or the IVIG treatments causing these or other dental problems?

@sickofbeinsick1 .. How difficult for you! Have you talked to your doctor about the sores in your mouth? Or, do you have a good dentist? They are trained to see all the problems in a mouth. If you don’t have a dentist, look for a general dentist and then ask for a referral to a specialized dentist. You don’t want to wait too long, as mouth sores can be a problem.

This web site by the American Dental Association has some good tips on finding a dentist.
Will you call both your doctor and dentist and explain that you have pus-filled sores in your mouth and need to be seen? Then let me know what they say!

I have a dentist…they want me to come in for cleaning… which I admit I have been putting off…my teeth are the problem…they’re just (not so) slowly, eroding away.

joyajoe. Two questions. 1) What holds your dentures in place if no gums? and
2) Can you pass along the name of the toothpaste? I'm using Colgate for sensitive teeth/gums but it is so thick and sticky, it is hard to get it rinsed off after brushing. I'm 77 and have tried so hard to save my natural teeth. Was doing pretty good with crowns, cleanings and exams every 4 months but my dentist is incompetent, or lazy. I see oral surgeon on Wed to discuss extracting 15 teeth. Thanks for your post/sharing.

Hi, fdixon,
There is an RX only toothpaste for sensitive teeth, and I think the main ingredient is flouride. It can work, but it takes a while, because I believe it's a gradual buildup process. It is made by Colgate, and it's called Prevident 5000. Your dentist can perscribe it. I'm using it myself, and it is gradually helping. I'm dealing with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, which is an auto-immune disease, but I believe in my case it's the prednisone I'm taking which is causing my problems with my teeth.

Yes. I was diagnosed with RA six years ago. Along the way, I developed gum disease, part to the dry mouth from Sjogren’s. It is very disheartening losing your teeth because if that. I spend lots of time cleaning my teeth too.

I have problems with dry mouth also. My dentist prescribed a high fluoride toothpaste to use to prevent cavities. So far so good. You need a prescription, but not costly.

I have Neurofibromitosis type 2 and lost all of my teeth by age 50, fortunately I had a great dentist. He made me beautiful teeth and no one ever knew. Now
I have no gums to hold my teeth, that’s the disease. Not your problem! There
is a toothpaste for gum issues, try it. Best of luck to you.

joyajoe. I went back and reread your post and I think I misunderstood your history. Are you saying you did have a period of having dentures but now are not able to wear them at all? Thanks.

Yes, now I do try very hard to keep them in and do as best as I can in public. Now, at 76 , my gums have receded almost to the point of nothing. My dentist does the best she can, but there is really nothing to be done.
There no bones left. I’ve had this disease since birth but never bad until I hit my 50’s. My partner of 25 yrs has left me, because he has never been sick in his life. He will not accept what is happening. Hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else!

joyajoe. Wow. Hearing about a disease I've never heard of was enlightening but more so hearing what it has done to you. Hearing more of your "story" makes me know you are a very strong person. It touched me in a way that took me by surprise. I pray God will bless you through this. Stay strong.

Hi, There are many good teeth glue’s mon the market now, I have tried many, picked the best for my current
situation. If you still have some teeth or bone, try a few
until you find one that feels comfortable. I’m using something simple that doesn’t come right . Fixodent has
many types try them and you will find one right for you.
Good luck.

Prednisone... the perfect two-edged sword: so vital, but with nasty side effects.
You are worried about your teeth, good for you in taking extra care. Have you considered your other bones? Have you had a bone density scan. If you have been on Prednisone for some time, a check for your bone health may be a good idea.
After years of sporadic Prednisone treatment , for R.A. , chest infections and asthma, I now have the extra gift of osteoporosis. Easily treated, but another item for the list of medical conditions.

I have Lupus. Was diagnosed in 2017. I have a partial that does not fit because I lost weight. The dental office I got it made at is offering to cover the charges to get it fixed. Just wondering if this could help you. Pat

Help please!
Anyone with Baker’s cysts?
They are the painful annoying fluid cysts in the back of your knees. I happen to have it it in both knees ( bilateral ) very rare in both. My knees and legs are swollen and painful
Been on oral steroids for more than one month (40mg daily first, now 30 mg daily $ but I still can’t walk normally
I have to limp. I can’t bend the knees. They are better but I still feel pain and cannot really bend the knees
Anyone? Treatments other than oral steroids? My mood is terrible, very irritated due to the meds
Thanks a million

@kenyalama You might want to ask your question in the discussion on Bakers cysts. They may be able to give better answers than the autoimmune disease group!
