microcalcifications

I'm not sure but I can tell you this...I was always told that is what I had and I didn't think anything of it as the doctors didn't seem concerned. Then diagnosed with IDC at 52...wondering if those micro calcifications are what turned to cancer.

I too had micro calcifications and told all ok… until I was diagnosed with IDC !

Request an MRI. That is how I was eventually diagnosed… after a “ normal” 3d mammo and ultrasound. Thank goodness I persisted!

I had microcalcifications on a mammogram that were not included in the report until next mammogram 18 months later where they were compared with the current ones. It was IDC that then required mastectomy and chemo.
Yes- you have to insist on more testing.

@wimm07 I had microcalcifications that showed up on a mammogram quite awhile ago (1996). I had a biopsy that was negative. I agree with others here. I would recommend more study with MRI Can you talk with your doctor and ask for that?

Your comments are helpful because I too always had calcifications and had numerous callbacks but always received an all clear sign.

I often wonder what would have happened if I had had a biopsy (which was never recommended). I will say that I always had 3D mammograms read by a good solid radiation department.

But you stated that you had a biopsy on the micro calcifications which proved negative.

So what can be done? ♥️

I had a cluster of microcalcifications. It was so tiny that the breast surgeon told me she couldn't believe the radiologist even saw it. The chief of radiology suggested I have a stereostatic biopsy after having a 3 D mammogram. It was so small, but there was still some concern so I was sent to a breast surgeon for a lumpectomy. The biopsy revealed atypical ductal hyperplasia. Luckily it was caught early and had not broken through the ductal wall. I am now getting 6 months mammograms and taking anastrozole. The chief radiologist says calcifications can be an indicator of breast cancer. I am so lucky that the radiologist that read my annual mammogram had a keen eye. If you are near a breast center see if you can get a second opinion.

When I had concerning micro calcifications I was told I could biopsy or wait 6 months and biopsy. I chose to biopsy right away. (I don’t know why they’d even give the option to wait because I have a strong family history of breast cancer including my mother who died from it.) Biopsy revealed atypical lobular hyperplasia and flat epithelial atypia. Had lumpectomy and pathology revealed lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). Now I get yearly mammogram and breast MRI alternating every 6 months. I was on tamoxifen until I had to have a complete hysterectomy. Took Letrozole for 4 1/2 months but joint pain became unbearable. Now I’m on exemestane but that is also causing joint pain. My oncologist said if it’s bothering me I’ll be switched to anastrozole at my next appointment on the 25th. After a few months on that I’ll be switched back to Tamoxifen if I’m still having issues. But yes, micro calcifications can be associated with BC.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I go back Tuesday and will see what the plan of action will be. All of my moms sisters have had breast cancer, except for my mom. I will be making sure they check everything.
