Extreme earworms music stuck in head
Hi,
Over the past several months I've been having extreme earworms (music stuck in my head). It is so bad that it plays over my thoughts in my head.. just wish i could finally have some peace, quiet, and control over my mind..
My psychiatrist told me there is no specific condition for what i am describing, but the closest thing he would use to treat me for this was risperidone.. i didn't like the side effects so i switched to abilify (aripiprazole).
I was wondering if anyone else has had this, or is familiar with this and especially if there are any experts out there or anyone knows if abilify is indeed a medication that could treat this musical obsession symptom of mine.

@divinewisdom28 I can certainly relate to ear worms. I get these for music too although I mostly notice them when it is quiet or when I get in bed at night. I get ear worms when I’m feeling particularly anxious. This is something that has been happening more recently for me too. I don’t know if ear worms are associated with medication I do know that some people experience more anxiety when they start Abilify. May I ask why you were prescribed Abilify? Has this medication made you feel more anxious?
Hi,
So my psychiatrist initially prescribed me risperidone. He said it was to treat the earworms the same way how some people hear voices as it works on what he said was the dopamine 5 receptor I think, however i didn't like the side effects. it made me tired and gave me impotence...
So i asked if he could switch me to abilify since it's a different antipsychotic...I'm not really sure how the medications work in regards to this.
I currently am i only diagnosed with anxiety and depression and i haven't noticed the abilify making my anxiety any worse. I'm on 10mg.
The earworms literally last from the several minutes before i wake up until i go to bed. Have been dealing with this for about half a year now everyday..

I have inadvertently have Blake Shelton music in my ear. I think it’s a coping mechanism your brain uses to sooth down your anxiety.
I have had ear worms for much of my life and I am now 62. At times they are a bit annoying and I have wondered what causes it. Some of the songs that replay are ones popular when I was a child. My childhood was not the best. I can’t say they keep me awake, I already have chronic insomnia and they don’t seem to happen when I’m at work or busy.
Have you guys ever had any specific medication prescribed for them before?
It’s not something that i would want to take medication for. Annoying? Yes at times. Annoying enough for me to add another medication to my list? No, but others may feel differently.
@divinewisdom28 I am familiar with the use of risperadone for treating an auditory hallucinations but not for an earworm. You wrote that there has not been an uptick in anxiety or depression. How long have you been taking Abilify? In my case I figured out that I get an earworm for music that I have been listening to or singing in choir when my anxiety symptoms are up. When I do get an earworm I distract myself with prayers that I sing to myself. I find that to be soothing.
Have you tried anything to help you through ear worms other than medication?
I would welcome earworms of MUSIC over the 'voices' that talk to me when I attempt sleep!
.
I feed mine at least once a day. Currently one by Yes, one from Tears for Fears, and one from The Talking Heads.
.
But I also feed my ears other things.

Hi,
I am aware this thread is old but I still want help. I am suffering from earworms in such a way that the music is interfering with my ability to form basic thoughts on a regular basis. For instance, I cannot have conversations the same way I used to because audio is distracting the paths of thought.
Over this discussion, I read risperadone and abilify as the only medications mentioned. Could someone please provide a list of medications that may potentially help with the issue?
Thank you,
JJ
