Considering Shoulder Replacement due to Osteoarthritis

Posted by beatricefay @beatricefay, Apr 4, 2023

I'm considering having a shoulder replacement due to osteoarthritis. I've tried PT, but my range of motion is very limited. I'm 78 so worry about it getting worse and affecting my quality of life. Anybody have any comments or suggestions regarding the procedure?

I am 74. I had Reverse Shoulder Replacement in 2020. So glad I had it …I have osteoarthritis in knees, shoulders hands ☹️
I have had no problems with my new shoulder and the operation was good. Not much pain for me just having to wait and wear that shoulder sling was my problem it’s just awkward

I had my reverse TSR in October of 2021, no unexpected problems, I am very happy with the results, I have good range, no pain. Back to normal in about 3-4 months. I don't even think about it being artificial and have to remind myself to take it easy with those heavy big water buckets or cat litter pails. Prior to the surgery, I had constant arthritic ache in the shoulder, hard to get to sleep because of the ache. My range of motion had shrunk to where I could not raise my right arm level with my shoulder, let alone get it anywhere near my head, all hair washing and showering was left handed. There were days I had to use both hands to get a coffee cup up to my lips. I delayed surgery for as long as I could, but after one particularly painful attack which lasted for a couple of days, I decided it was time! Would do it again.

So glad you had such good results. I'll be getting a conventional replacement, probably in September. I am so encouraged by your experience. It does take some of the worry off my "shoulders."

I am considering joint replacement for my shoulder. I’ve had both knee joints replaced. I get cortisone shots now in both shoulders.

I had a shoulder replacement in 2013 and returned to light work for 5 hours a day 20 days post surgery. I was an RN in an outpatient clinic giving injections and doing medication management.

I had a cortisone shot but it didn't help much. Now that dressing is getting more difficult, I'm cautiously looking forward to getting the replacement.

Had a total shoulder replacement in May 2022. It has now displaced and has to be redone next week with a reverse TSR. In my_ opinion _ it never did stop hurting. My Pt therapist. Could not understand why I did not recover. He suggested a nerve study. which I never did. I think I did to much to soon. Driving housework etc. So be sure you have help around the house and a way to pt. Baby yourself until the Dr. Says OK. Forget about everything except yourself. Good luck. Hope your better soon
