Hi there: Has anyone had success in weaning off of Omeprazole? I take it for GERD. Thank you in advance!

These PPI's are addicting that's why the label says don't take for over 14 days! Doctors don't care they keep prescribing and when one doesn't work they raise the dose or med! I was on them for 20 years and was on the max dose of the strongest meds. I'm pretty sure that was what was causing my severe reflux. I finally got the Linx device to keep the acid down and even after surgery still had to take the meds because I was addicted and I think the rebound is worse then the reflux. I started taking Zantac twice a day to wean off and did an elimination diet and once I eliminated foods that cause the reflux was finally able to wean off the Zantac! Now finding out Zantac causes cancer! I had a fructose malabsorption and once I eliminated fruit was much better, good luck!

I weaned off of 40 mg of Pantaprazole after almost 5yrs on it. I have no heartburn or problems.
I get scoped in October to check my BE. Last time there was no sign of it. Hopefully I can stay off of it.

How did you wean off the Pantoprozole? Was this under a Dr's supervision or did you do this yourself?

I'm 87 and had been on omeprazole for about 3 months but had GERD for at least 25 years but treated it with ginger candy, papaya enzyme pills from puritan's pride and chewable calcium. Omeprazole made it difficult to breaths so without consulting my DR. I just went off it totally. Then every a.m.
I have a 1 tbsp vinegar cocktail (in hot water with a little maple syrup to make it palatable (20 mins. B4 breakfast, because us elderly have less acid than what we need and the vinegar replenishes it. Then if I get even a hint of GERD I take just a piece of chewable calcium. Hot milk also helps me, as does kefir. It is possible to get off it. Keep finding out the things that work for you and then just resolve to do it. I've now been off of it for 6 weeks and feel so so much better. Paula W

It took me a year to wean myself off. My doctor recommended alternating between vitamin E with Prilosec, but never take them on the same day. I started with one day a week, vitamin E and no Prilosec. Did this two months or so. Once my acid reflux was tolerable on my off days, then I would add another day of vitamin E. It took a year and didn’t think I could do it, especially for being on it for 4+ years. I have occasional flare ups and will take Prilosec for a few days. Good luck!

Hmmmm.........I take many vitamins each morning including Vitamin E along with my Oprazole. I have not had any GERD attacks all this time. I attribute it to the Omprazole I have been taking all these years. Of course, I do not eat any thing spicy and no alcohol. Is it just luck, or is my new regimine working?

Diet is very important to lower gerd issues. For me it's No soda, booze, juice.
I only drink almond milk, water, green tea, and 2 cups of low acid coffee in the morning.
I don't eat out and have cut out fried fatty foods. No spicy foods or tomato products.

I tried that, per my Dr's advice. A month later I started having stomach pains and had to go back on the Pantoprazole, which relieved the pain. So I'm still on it but would like to find a better way to wean off. Thanks.

You're doing great keep up the good work on your diet also your portions don't eat anything 2 to 3 hours before going to bed I'm sure you've heard of tilting your bed or getting a pillow that has a wedge

Some of the products commonly used to wean off PPIs and stay off of them include Gaviscon Advance with aniseed (in UK it may just be called Gaviscon); alkaline water (drink it after eating and drop it into my nostrils to address respiratory reflux, which affects the throat area and isn't diagnosed by endoscopy); chewing sugarless gum after eating; moving around a bit after eating. I am just weaning off my second round of PPI and hope it goes better than the first time, which left me with acid rebound and SIBO. You may want to consider a probiotic to help your gut biome, which is disrupted by PPIs. There are also two ENTs who have recipes for low acid eating: Dr. Koufman (Dropping Acid) and Dr. Aviv. There is a FB group acid watchers warriors that offer recipe advice. Restrictive eating for awhile seems to be the key. Good luck!
