Mucus caused by Asthma or something else?

Posted by tishmarie22 @tishmarie22, Mar 30, 2023

I have had asthma since birth. I am 50 years old and somewhat active. I have sleep apnea as well. Mucus is my main problem. I wake up with it on my teeth and I think it may contributing to my sleep apnea. I took mucamix last night and I woke up feeling super good today. How can they check to see if I have asthma or if its something else?

Ask your pulmonologist for lung function testing (LFT). When some numbers fall below certain benchmarks, COPD can come into play. And a CT scan can often identify emphysema and bronchiectasis. I also have asthma with an annoying mucus component and my pulmonologist says this is pretty common among many asthmatics. Outside of the mucus, I feel fantastic and there’s really nothing physical that I can’t do (thanks to my daily inhaler).

I had been treated for allergy induced asthma for a few years but started having other issues like increased mucus production and shortness of breath. That lead to a chest x-ray, CT, PET, etc. with a new diagnosis of emphysema. Nodules led me to the wonderful doctors at Mayo. The most important thing that I've learned on this journey is to be your own best healthcare advocate! If you have a concern don't wait, reach out to your physician.

@tishmarie22 Welcome to Mayo Connect.
Mucinex (guaifenesin) is a great mucus thinner, but increased mucus can be a sign that your asthma is progressing or something else is going on. Whatever it might be, early diagnosis means they can treat you, with either meds, breathing exercises or both to keep your lungs healthy.

All of the advice you have gotten so far is right on target. I'm guessing you have seen a pulmonologist for your sleep apnea? If so, they are a great place to start this exploration. If not, ask for a referral.

Will you let me know what you find out?
Sue

With x rays they tell you if you have it also breathing test will shoe it you need someone who specializes in lung care but with sleep apnea you already a specialist for these issues right ??
