Anoro inhaler question

Posted by Stella Tucson @fraytv, Mar 31, 2023

I saw a different pulmonologist today due to my current one going elsewhere. This dr wants me to stop using Breo Ellipta (have been using for last 8 years) & start using Anoro. He said it is because Breo is a broncodialator with steroids & steroids are not good for the lungs. I have bronchiectasis & right now still dealing with pneumonia & pseudomonas. Would appreciate any comments regarding these 2 inhalers.

I just posted a link to this study on another thread, but it seems even more relevant here.
"The risk of mycobacterial infections associated with inhaled corticosteroid use"

I saw a video in which Dr. Kevin Winthrop, ID who has done lots of studies on NTM, said he tries to get patients off steroids if possible. I think because it suppresses immune function, which is addressed in this study.
Wishing you well.

I think if you are going to use a LABA (long acting bronchodilator) you are not supposed to use it without a steroid because that can be dangerous. I could be wrong but that is what I was told by a pulmonary doctor years ago when I lived in Europe.

That is the common wisdom. However it bumps up against reality for some people - my asthma defies control without the inhaled steroid. Last year we (my pulmo & I) decided to try the combination. For me it has been a game changer, and I'm approaching 10 months with one single exacerbation and no lung infection, and only rare use of a rescue inhaler. We'll see how it progresses.

On this topic, I was also told not to use an anticholinergic (sp?) with bronchiectasis because that can dry up the mucus and make it much harder to expel. I believe one of the components of Anoro is an anticholinergic - Umeclidinium. Now again I could be wrong about this but I have always avoided antihistamines that are known anticholinergics for this reason. Maybe the thinking has changed. But I am interested if others were told something similar.

It's balancing act, isn't it? I hope it continues to go well for you.

Got switched to Anoro three months ago! Love it!
once a day, with a dose of the old inhaler IF NEEDED,
but it's seldom

I got pneumonia in Jan, and MAC in March. Thanks for the paper.
I'll print it out and give it to my Pulmo on Monday.

Question about anoro inhaler. Soon after inhaling I cough and bring up mucous. I am wondering if I am getting the full dose or if some of it is coming up with the mucous.
