When did you have your TKR? Is there a specific area that burns? Do you feel the burning all the time? Have you felt it from the beginning or has the burning feeling developed over a few days? Is your discomfort from the burning relieved by pain meds, if you’re taking pain meds? Is the burning relieved by icing?
For the first 1-1/2 weeks after my recent right TKR, I felt a lot of a burning type pain each time I lowered my leg after having it elevated. I assumed it was a circulation issue. I now experience a burning, tingling feeling in the patella area. It lasts from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes. It’s bearable but it definitely gets my attention each time it happens.
There are lots of supportive TKR folks here with countless experiences going through the TKR process. I hope someone can answer your question. Good luck!
I had my TKR 3 1/2 weeks ago, I’m doing well, haven’t had professional PT as my insurance doesn’t cover , my main problem is a severe burning on the right side towards my tibia. Is this normal?
Chi girl, So glad you’re doing better now. It appears we just have to wait it out sometimes and let our bodies do their mending. I’m 13 days post surgery with bilateral TKR. By all measurements available from my PT I’ve got great ROM for 2 weeks post op. I’ve still got a lot to go to get at ‘0’ or ‘120’. But, I’m sleeping better at night but still wake up multiple times during the night. Sometimes my husband will get me up and we’ll walk around the house to loosen up the tight muscles. I’m trying to do everything my PT tells me to do.
I know I have a lot of work ahead, but it will be so much better after the healing.
I had double replacement in 2010 and right after surgery, they asked me if I had a lot of pain. I told them no but they both burn.
It is now 2023 and they still burn. Bed sheets, clothes on my knees, anything that touches them, they never stop burning. I have been on tramadol for the past 13 years and it takes the edge off but they still burn. My doctor did not seem to be concerned and of course I have not seen him since 2014. I would love to know what causes the burning and I had the top knee surgeon in the Philadelphia area.
I would say the burning sensation you have is related to nerve cell repair.
I had a TKR in Sept 2023 and I have the burning sensation. It started out as a stabbing electrical pain and then felt like I had bees under my knee and now it is burning. Nerves get cut during the surgical process and take time to repair
It mainly bothers me at night
If I take Lyrica (prescription) the burning subsides so I usually do that a few times a week.
I also hear that alpha lipoic acid which is an antioxidant supplement is good for nerve regeneration
Good luck
I had a full almost 5 months ago. Stiffness can last 12 to 18 months. Just joined a gym and got a trainer. Seems to help some. I have good days and bad. Today is leaning to bad. On my feet all day for work. I also have numbness on the lower outer part of my knee. That is because they cut nerves in the surgery. That too should get better over time
Until you can apply heat to your knee, keep icing. I could not take the pain meds at all. Extra strength Tylenol eases both the burning and tightness. Keep moving your knee, stretching and breathing through the pain. The tightness will subside as your therapy gets more intense. My burning progressed to zingers then to itching.
At 3 weeks post TKR, I started using a heating pad and then massaged the warm knee with high quality coco butter scar cream.
I am just about 20 weeks out and still have numbness on the outside of my knee where the nerves are healing.
Best of luck to you.

I just “discovered” walking it off helps a bit when the burning starts and I get so fidgety overnight.
