What is considered family history?
Hello! I am confused as to what is considered family history. I have tried google and I get different answers. My primary doctor doesn’t seem too concerned. 3 of my moms sisters have had breast cancer and 4 of my moms sisters/brothers children (my first cousins) have been diagnosed. The ones who have been tested do not have the brac genes. I recently went for my mammogram and had a mass that needed a new mammogram and ultrasound. The ultrasound tech talked to the radiologist who said it might be a cyst but doesn’t correlate with the mammogram but you are good. Come back in six months. The radiologist didn’t do a detailed report so I don’t know if it was round, smooth or fluid filled, anything like that. It just said there was a mass and where it’s located and how it didn’t correspond to the mammogram and was birads 3. I think if my moms family didn’t have all of those diagnosed I would be ok come back in six months but now I’m questioning everything. I don’t want to be overly paranoid but it is the report that isn’t sitting well. I did message my primary and she just said she doesn’t know anymore than what the radiologist told me and we can discuss it at my next appt in a month and half. Any thoughts?

Generally mother and sisters (siblings). I had two grandmothers and an aunt and two cousins with breast cancer but testing didn't who any genetic component to my cancer.

There are many more genetic mutations that factor into BC than BRAC. I am hoping that you are fine, but I think you are smart to investigate further. With your family history, you may qualify for free or inexpensive genetic testing. This would be beneficial for yourself and other blood relatives.

I do not know a lot about BC other than the basics and just seem to never question anything so I am thinking I need to educate myself further. I appreciate you taking time to answer. Have a good day!

4 Reactions@amelialynne29 I was told originally that I could not inherit anything from my fathers side and I was negative for BRAC as well. Fast forward 10 years and I was genetically tested and found that my fathers line and my mothers line carry other genetic factors.
I have cowden syndrome which is a PTEN mutation. I started my breast cancer journey in my thirties. They learn more all the time about genetics and how they interact with our risks.
You know best when it comes to your body, is there a chance you could get in to see a gyno doctor?

I would have your physician that ordered the mammogram call the radiologist to receive further clarification. ♥️

4 ReactionsI would recommend getting another radiologist to look at last mammogram. I had something suspicious that was double checked a week later and first radiologist said all ok. 6 months later another mammogram and different radiologist recommended biopsy which then showed cancer. Radiologist said it hadn’t changed from first mammogram but now it turned out to be invasive eg left the duct. I cannot help but suspect it would have been in situ 6months earlier. So get another read to make sure. Lumps are not good!
