Anyone taken Evenity (romosozumab) for Osteoporosis?

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, May 27, 2020

Has anyone taken Evenity? I understand it’s only been on the market for a little over a year. I’m hoping it will help with my severe osteoporosis. Any information is helpful.

Thank you so much for your reply re Evenity side effects. That does not sound good, and I can understand why you would want to stop. I will watch for this reaction. I did get a rash on each forearm in the same place about two weeks after shot. A little weird, but it only itched initially. I stopped using a loofah shower puff and applied moisturizer and it went away so it might have been dermatitis. I'm as low as -5.2 so I need to build bone at this point, so I hope I can continue. Hope your fall bone scan is good news for you and thanks again.

Was your rash filled with liquid? I got a bad rash on my forearm with Fosamax after 3 weeks so I switched to Evenity. I’d like to follow up Evenity with a short dose of Reclast but my endo is afraid I’m allergic to bisphosphonates.

Hello, my rash was not really filled with liquid. It was a 2" x 3" patch of quite small red bumps on both forearms. They are now almost completely gone. These bumps only itched for about a day and I think I made them worse by scratching. I finally noticed them when they itched. I'm still thinking they were some type of dermatitis. I mentioned them to the nurse today when I had my second set of Evenity shots. She just wanted to make sure there were no hives or breathing problems. So far nothing unusual happening after today's shots, but I do have swelling at the site. (Both in left arm today.) How many Evenity shots have you had thus far? It would be difficult if you are allergic to bisphosphonates as it seems that is what we need to take to keep from losing what bone we may have built with the anabolic drugs like Evenity, Forteo and Tymlos.
Good luck with your decision and thanks for sharing your experience. LMK what you decide.

Update: My wife Betty had her January 16th Evenity shot, which was her third shot overall. They waited 30 days then did the extraction of the bad tooth and a bone graft. She will be off of the Evenity for two months, going back on it around April 16th. If all goes well with the bone graft she will have an implant installed in August, which will later hold a crown. She would have to stop Evenity one month before August and wait two months afterwards before going back on it. When she does go back on it she will then finish off her remaining Evenity injections. This schedule was worked out between her Endodontist and her Rheumatologist.

After 8 injections I decided ( at recommendation of my endocrinologist) to take a month or 2 off to see if the symptoms I was having resolve.
I developed a chronic cold with cough (had to use my inhaler) and itchy scalp w rash like bumps around my ears… very minor but noticeable to me.
So far, those are resolving interestingly. And thankfully!
So will probably stop Evenity and switch to something to keep the gains.
Thinking Reclast -
What has been everyone’s experiences ?

I just completed my 7th injections. I have had hoarseness, fatigue and abdominal bloating after each injection but only lasting 2-3 days. This last set I again had hoarseness that has developed into a unrelenting cough. No fever, aches, nasal drainage or any other symptom. After 5 days of hoping it would fade the doc ruled out a cold or flu, chest x ray clear. I was given a Z Pack and Tessalon Perls. Tessalon did nothing. I can hardly hold a conversation without coughing up a lung.
Did you stop Evenity and if so did the cough and cold symptoms you experienced improve?

I do not want to go through another post injection event like this one again.
Thanks so much

Yes- I also developed a congested cough around the 6-7 month on Evenity. I took antibiotics and used 2 different inhalers to try to get rid of it. It got better but left completely once Evenity was stopped.
I attributed it to being around grand babies with runny noses but now I’m wondering if it was because of Evenity?
I never had a fever either. Was very tired and had a brain fog, and sad mood.
Reclast left me sore and fatigued but that’s lifted now (3 months ago) for most part.

I had an extraction in early January. Today it is March and I have had no infection or problems so far. I have not been off of my Evenity shots. I will have my 8th one this month. I also had a total hip replacement done years ago that my doctors and I had to way the risks of a possible infection go to my hip. So far, everything good.

Did you see an improvement in your BMD after using Evenity? If yes, would you please share the increase that you experienced (before and after t-scores).

I’m not sure - I’ve had dexa-scans on 3 different machines . I initially thought I’d had amazing results but now I’m skeptical- I will have any more on the same machines so I’ll know more then.

I have taken one dose, due to take another dose this week. I am curious if anyone has been given physical recommendations or limitation to follow while on this treatment.

My Mom started Evenity shots November 2020. She is 84 and has "horrible" bones. Just prior to starting Evenity, she had numerous fractures. Although the side effects scare me, we felt we did not have a choice but to start her on the medication. She had Prolia shots for years, apparently it was not doing the trick. She's always drank lots of milk, takes calcium supplements, magnesium and D3. We knew we had to do something different or she would continue to have fractures. After 3 months it seems to be helping. She fell three weeks ago and did NOT fracture any bones. So far, she does not appear to have any major side effects. We pray that continues.

This is encouraging, I am 60 and have had several fractures. Just started Evenity hoping I will get my mobility back. I was very active before this snuck up on me.
