I am scared to and with good cause. I have been on prednisone for almost a year due to a misdiagnosis of poly myalgia rheumatica. The steroids created severe bone loss in my spine as well as osteoporosis in my lumbar spine. The endocrinologist recommended Evenity. After reading the potential side effects I decided to try a different approach by going to a holistic clinic. If you can, see a holistic practitioner who is knowledgeable in the area of osteoporosis and just hear what they say. It can’t hurt you. Then in your free time go to Amazon Prime and watch the documentary “Heal”. Now that will really change our view about illness and healing.
Along with Prolia, reflecting on what I did different after reading everything I could find, I began eating 5-6 prunes throughout the day, walked 3 miles 5 times a week, did a leg press machine and a pull down T-bar 4 times a week, made a fruit and kale smoothie daily with 1 scoop of Collagen in it, took 2 Triple Action Osteo-Biflex, 200 mcg Vitamin K2-Mk7, 250 mg Magnesium, 2000 IU Vitamin D, 1 Mature Multi Vitamin and ate or drank Calcium all throughout the day. I try to keep myself hydrated. I also have increased the amount of protein I eat to 60. I use 1/2 scoop of Vital Proteins (3 Types of collagen) and 1/2 scoop of Dr. Axe's (5 Types collagen). Read about prune studies.
Wow. I would like to avoid medication as long as possible. I am going to try the nutritional and exercise route first. Thank you for sharing
I went to Keith McCormick, a chiropractor and osteoporosis specialist who wrote "The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis." He recommended medications for me, in no uncertain terms (Tymlos) and used meds himself before starting a holistic regimen.
As someone who could not tolerate any of the meds, and tried for years, and suffered 7 spinal fractures, I just want to post to let people know that fractures are serious business, painful and disabling. The problem is, with osteoporosis, we can feel fine and even strong. I was doing sword tai chi before my last fractures.
I finally got on Tymlos by starting at a low dose and moving up. Thank heavens for Tymlos- at least in my case. No further fractures in two years and so much stronger.
@autumnanna I cannot believe your doctor said Tymlos is a lot of paperwork! I assume he means with insurance. I would find another doc. That is truly shocking.
If your bone density is seriously low, Forteo, Tymlos or Evenity are best choices, then Reclast to "lock gains in."
If your osteoporosis is mild, you could consider Reclast. But I would still find another doc!
You are in control. Your doctor cannot insist on anything in the end. You have to consent.
Wow, that’s impressive. When do you have your next DEXA scan?
I put prunes ion my grocery list!
Thank you for the information. I am interested to hear about your daily regimen.
I just had a DEXA scan. My regimen is on top of Prolia. After 1 year of Prolia, my diet, Vitamins and exercise, my bone density in my spine increased from 4.1 to 3.6. I get a yearly DEXA scan. I just got my 3rd Prolia shot a week ago.
Thank you for all the information concerning individual experience with Osteoporosis diagnosis. I am at a crossroad here a year after having kidney transplant. Has anyone had a kidney transplant and been treated with any particular medication. My dr suggested Prolia however from reading many women' experience with Prolia, I am scared to death. I also had surgery after kidney transplant to clear a diverticulosis sp? infection. My kidney is stable and have regain all my weight loss of 20 lbs. Went down to 94 lb after transplant.
Has anyone had a kidney transplant and been. treated with medication for osteporisis? Any information would be welcomed. Thank you
