Hollow echo distortion in ear? Scared
What is this metallic echo.. hollow in my head?
My ear sounds like there's a actual hollow in my head. Like it's a metal bucket. There's a metallic echo to my own footsteps, tapping teeth, tapping head, male voices, bass sounds.
Anyone else heard of this? It's really frightening to have this develop after a noise damage. ENT has no clue. Please tell me others experience this or know what it is? Thanks!

If I touch the left side of my head I get a sudden increase in my tinnitus in the left ear. Have no idea why that is the case because I can touch the right side of my head and the tinnitus in that ear does not react at all. Anyway it makes styling my hair on the left side a pain in the —-.
Did you ever find out the reason for that Echo sound, as I have it also. Every time I speak or someone else speaks, it goes off in my right ear. It's like two metal bars hitting each other and that sound you get for a few seconds after. What is it? Thank you
How are you today?
I'm not sure if it is the same thing but maybe somewhat similar. I went deaf overnight and sound echoes into and through my head when I speak. Almost like landing in a plane and your ears go deaf. I haven't found a solution so far but my ENT doc said that he thinks my eustachian canals are blocked. If so can anything be done for that? All of these obscure health problems are so hard to live with. I have an appointment to see the ENT again in a few weeks. It's so hard getting appointments lately.
I would get a second opinion, immediately. Google SSNHL and see if that fits. If it does fit and if you do have SSNHL, you need steroids immediately and it is an ENT emergency, although many miss it. Even go to the emergency room if an ENT won't see you. The echo sound, for me, went away after also losing hearing over night, and after steroid injections into the ear,. I do have SSNHL. Good luck!!
Yes, sudden sensorineural hearing loss treatment, to be successful, often must be treated within 48 hours. Steroids are used, but they are not always effective. For a few lucky people, the hearing loss can go away gradually.
I know a few people who have had this happen after flying. I always take an antihistamine before I fly so I avoid congestion. I was given that advice years ago.
I'm not sure if the echo issue has anything to do with SSNHL as that could be more related to tinnitus. Keep us posted on how this plays out for you. Good luck.
On the positive side, know that even when hearing loss progresses to the profound state, there is technology that can be helpful.
Hi Julie - when you say the hearing returns gradually, could this be over a period of months? I swear, after 4 months with ssnhl, I feel like some higher frequencies might be returning.
Hearing loss is a lot like fingerprints. Everyone's different. I hope that is happening for you. Have you considered comparing a new audiology test to one you already have?
How are you feeling today, doyou still have a echo type sound/thing in your ear? thanks
I have the exact same symptoms. Eustachian tube and ear was completely clogged for 1-2 months. Then with flonase I got eustachian tube to open. Now metallic sheet metal being hit sound when I step hard or tap ear. Do glad I saw this post. I couldn't find anything online. Thank you soooo much.
