Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?

Posted by mhort1213 @mhort1213, Feb 28, 2019

I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

Has anyone had the sensation of an ace bandage being wrapped tightly around the new knee joint?

TOTALLY , I have had 3 TKR and could say that feeling has come with each one . I think this is very common. How long ago was your TKR ? Keep rehab forever

Yes, i had the feeling when i was trying to bend my right knee for weeks after surgery. So i understood what people were talking about. However, now that the majority of swelling is gone that tight feeling is gone as well.I am 7 weeks out and my knee feels soooo much better. Keep exercising and moving. Just don’t do tooo much, it increases inflammation and the tight feeling.

Hi @bwilson1114, as you can see from the helpful replies from @vgen and @sprinrosa64, you are not alone in feeling this tightness. In fact, I moved your post to this existing discussion:

I did this so you can read the previous post and connect with members easily. How long ago was your knee replacement? Have you started rehab?

Yes, I did have the same…. It went away very slowly at about 8 weeks post Surgery.

I am at 5 months and still have the tight band feeling. I was dismissed from PT at 3 months and since being discharged my ROM is 116 on my own and if I use the band it is 125. However I can't get rid of that tight band feeling. When I do any exercise it really bothers me to where I just want to sit but I know that I should be moving. I walk 4-6,000 steps a day sometimes, use a recumbent bike and do some of the PT exercises but I still can have lots of soreness, stiffness and that band feeling. I feel like it will never go away. I take 600 mg of Gabapentin at bedtime, an occasional Tylenol 3, regular Tylenol and Diclofenac gel and something along the lines of Ben Gay for soreness. I cannot take Nsaids. I feel like it will never go away and my surgeon at 3 months said he would see me back at 9.

You are definitely not alone in this feeling. Members like @sprinrosa64, @vgen, and @brescher and so many others experienced the same feeling as well.

@ert, what sort of stretches and activities has PT had you doing? Are you doing anything else like other members have talked about like the pool and biking?

Glad the tight band is getting better for you. It took me by surprise. Had no idea it might last so long. Any tips for extra exercise: comfort?
