Regarding taking thyroid medications. I was directed to take nothing with Levothyroxine. So I set aside my pill before bedtime then take it when I get up to urinate at night. In that way one can absorb its full strength. Hope this helps.

Agreed, synthroid I also take first thing in the morning, wait a couple of hours, then take all else!

I have been on Areds2 for several years and my AMD had gotten worse and now have GA. I read some data that said that’s possible and one should get tested for zinc sensitivity. Does anyone have at input on this topic!

My doctor told me to take one AREDS 2, and I recently asked him why one instead of two. He said it's because my multivitamin already has everything in AREDS 2, and I just need one to bring the dosages to the level needed for my macular degeneration.

So maybe for anybody who can't tolerate taking two AREDS, check your multivitamin if you're taking one, and see if you're actually getting too much of something in AREDS that's causing the side effects. Just a thought.

Hi @sally1b2b
I've been taking AREDS 2 for about a year and have never experienced an upset stomach after taking the pill. I recently started taking one in the morning and one in the evening which I think is the dosage recommended on the packaging. I have a friend in his mid 80s who was involved in the Bausch and Laumb study for AREDS 2 and he still receives free pills from them. He's never had any stomach issues either. I did find that it is a known side effect that you should discuss with your doctor if you are having it.

I've had pretty bad stomach upset stomach since starting Areds2. I also get migraines and the frequency has increased dramatically since starting Ared2. Which is what I was initially searching to find out, is there a connection to ingestion of this suppliment. Ared2 is the only change I've made to my meds and supplements in over a year.

Hi @dbgreene, Welcome to Connect. I never had any adverse side effects from Areds 2 but have read that it can cause the symptoms you describe. Here's a list of the symptoms on Drugs.com - https://www.drugs.com/sfx/preservision-areds-2-side-effects.html.

I'm not a doctor but if it were me, I would definitely stop taking the Areds 2 and possible discuss any interactions with other meds you take with your doctor or pharmacist.

Have you discussed it with your doctor?

Thank you for your input on AREDS2.... Such a conundrum! I hope more folks will weigh in as time progresses and we find our own solutions to be the best for each of us.

Good to know, I opted out of these.
Its a shame the FDA's follow through is not better. The company should be more responsible for a better formula...

I will be discussing these issues my doctor next week as a matter of fact. In the meantime I've stopped the Areds2.

I have stopped my two Areds per day as well. The dosage is way too high and my doctor told me they are ‘garbage’‼️ gratefully Marianne🙏

The AREDS2 formulation is proven in a major clinical trial conducted by the National Institutes of Health to reduce the risk of conversion of dry AMD to neovascular (wet) AMD in patients with intermediate dry AMD. It is important to take the AREDS2 supplement when recommended. It is well tolerated by most people.

I stopped Areds 2 and now I am taking Life Extension’s “ MacuGuard “. I pray this will do the trick
