weird sleep cycle

Posted by mgw @mgw, Feb 19, 2023

I had a sleep test done around 2 years ago, and it showed that I get all of my REM sleep at the end of my sleeping hours. For years I have complained of not getting restorative sleep. I fall asleep easy, stay sleeping, but never wake up refreshed. At my follow up appointment, my Dr said he had not seen anyone's results that looked like mine. He suggested I take a supplement Mag Calm Pro, but I did not notice any difference. He suggested that it didn't matter when I was getting REM sleep as long as the quantity was sufficient which he said it was. I still struggle every day to get out of bed. Any one else out there ?

Hi @mgw, Welcome to Connect. I know it has to be difficult during the day after not getting any restful sleep. I did read an article that shows a connection between REM sleep disorders and chronic fatigue that you might find helpful.
"While objective sleep parameters do not clearly predict subjective reports of sleep disturbance, other physiological measures may have more promise for detection of alterations in CFS/ME patients' sleep. Stage shifts4,34 and dynamic stage transitions50 have been shown to discriminate CFS/ME patients and healthy controls. The relative frequency of REM to NREM transition is lower in CFS/ME, while there are significantly more transitions from REM and stage 1 sleep to wakefulness.50 Normal continuation of sleep in stage 1 and REM is disrupted in CFS/ME, which may contribute to feelings of non-restorative sleep upon waking."

Did your sleep study show any obstructive sleep apnea?
