IT band syndrome after knee replacement
I had both knees replaces last month. Right on 6/4 and left on 6/13. The right knee has done great. But the left has had issues. This week both PT and the surgeon's nurse said I have IT band syndrome. PT put a strip of K-tape down the side of my leg and suggests ice massage to the area. And the nurse showed me a stretching exercise to do. I am wondering if others have had this problem and how it was handled and how long it took to get better. The pain behind my knee prevents me from raising my leg while walking.

Hi gypsy just wanted to reach out see how you are doing ? I know how frustrating it can be going through having tkr and not getting the results you anticipated…. I know dr are hesitant to do mri after new knee replacement they say films are not clear….I hope you get some answers meanwhile keep moving as much as possible…. It gets better
I have been dealing with IT band on my left knee replacement 12/1.
Last week my doctor put me on prednisone and changed my pain reliever, and added a nerve pain reliever. It has helped.
I am doing stretches, ice, elevation, and rest. I also have been getting cupping and massages and going to have dry needling tomorrow.
From what I have learned in the past 5 weeks of dealing with this is that it takes time. I know your pain, hang in there, don’t let your Dr ignore you, and do what your PT says!
Hi there @joanb1229
I don't think you told me where "your area" happens to be. Please let me know the city and area within the city if it is a very populous one.
Thanks.....

I am experiencing the same thing. My surgery was 6/6 this year. I’ve done great. I went for a car ride where I sat for close to an hour, then was at someone’s house so not elevating, then back home another hour. The next day I could barely walk. And it’s been downhill since. I had ITB pain before surgery but now it’s excruciating and I can’t walk normal or anything. I was able to walk Sam’s and Costco two weeks ago. Now, I prob could t get in the bike. So much pain and I was plan I g to return to work as an OR nurse at 6 weeks which is this Thursday. Won’t happen. Help me.
This sounds like what I have going on. I’m 6 weeks out from surgery. I was making great progress and thought I would be back to work full time but haven’t been able to due to the pain and associated lack of sleep. I do get some relief by maxing out Tylenol and Ibuprofen, supplemented with oxycodone a couple of times a day and applying ice. I was feeling like jumping out of my skin a couple of days ago. I’m doing a little better now. I see my surgeon in two days.
Now 4 years later did you ever get better? How soon after your TKR did you start having pain and then how soon after TKR did you arthroscopic surgery? What were your symptoms?
I’m experiencing significant ITB pain, along with hamstring pain. I had TKR 15 weeks ago. I had some hamstring issues prior to surgery, but it’s much worse now. I’m in PT twice a week, and MT 2 x per month. Both of these help, but the pain is still debilitating at times. Maxing out Tylenol and ibuprofen gives me some relief. I’m not getting consistent sleep and I’m not sure what to try next.
Hi, I had TKR both at the same time 2015. Revision due to instability on the right knee two years ago, added a thicker spacer in the same on the left 10 months ago. I saw my surgeon about some issues including unresolved sutures or bumps. He said they might go away. I might just be stuck with it. And also to address ITB syndrome, friction and pain on the outside. I've been consistently stretching and foam rolling first thing in the morning and also throughout the day when I feel pain tightness and that seems to be helping. Here's a few I've found helpful particularly the standing cross leg stretch, and also figure 4 while lying down. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/it-band-stretches
Hi,
I had a total knee replacement on my right knee 5 months ago, but my left It band is so tight and is giving me issues.
I had one session of accupuncture and it already loosened up. I plan on going once a week.
I found a place in Network and my co-pay is $40. The accupuncturist placed the needles and then they put a cup over the needles and heat. I could feel it starting to work right away. If I were you, I would go on a local facebook page in your area and ask for recommendations. Or go on to your insurance website and look for Accupuncturists in Network and then google reviews. Good Luck!
