Kidney Transplant: Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen?
Hi Fellow Kidney Transplants,
I had my two root canals done yesterday. My endodonist would like me to take an anti-inflammatory like Advil, Motrin or Ibuprofen. I know when we had chronic kidney disease we needed to stay away from Ibuprofen. But now that we had our transplant, are we able to take Ibuprofen occasionally or are you still staying away from it? (I was told that Tylenol is not an anti-inflammatory, but it helps with the pain).
Please give me your thoughts.
Many thanks!

@cmael, we were told to avoid all NSAIDs when my husband was on dialysis. Only Tylenol was approved. Since his kidney transplant, Tylenol is the only OTC pain reliever I give him. But I always consult with either the transplant team or the local neph first before giving him any medication that may react with his immunosuppressant drugs. We got an email from Mayo Az not too long ago saying Paxlovid, the COVID 19 treatment, interacts with transplant drugs and may be toxic to the kidney!
Yes, I’ve heard that, too. I’m getting the Evushield monoclonal antibodies. I hope that it helps.
My transplant team also told me NO ibuprofen, only Tylenol. They are great about answering questions. I mostly use my health portal for questions.
Yes the portal is excellent to use, someone will get back to u rather quickly.💚
No nsaids use at all it does interfere w/immuno meds and may put u in kidney failure. Be safe!!
