Does anyone have experience with Mirtazapine?

Posted by faithshouse @faithshouse, Jun 20, 2019

My husband has trouble staying asleep, and falling back to sleep when he awakens during the night. It concerns him, but we wouldn't say that he is depressed. He had heard about Mirtazapine for sleeping. His doctor prescribed 15 mg. Has anyone had side effects, or depression while taking Mirapine? Is it more for depression, than for sleeping? Thanks for your feedback.

I haven't had any negative side effects from mirtazapine, not even the weight gain. In fact, I've lost weight since I've been on it. I haven't been sleeping as well recently though, so today my PCP increased me from 7.5mg to 15mg. So maybe on a higher dosage I might get some negative side effects. I'll post if I do.

Did you read my post of today above? It's said that at higher dozes it is LESS sedative -- check did with your dr. If you take it primarily for sleep, you may have to half, not double.

I took mirtazapine as well and it did not help me sleep either! Just made me very depressed actually. Also was hard to get off of after a month.

Exactly. It works in lower dosage for sleep in some people.

It probably has to do with the personal sleep/depression relationship

I saw my PCP today, and asked her about reports of insomnia with higher doses. I've read that here as well as on other websites. She said it does happen with some people, and gave me the choice of staying at this dose or increasing it. I don't do well with coping with my pain when I don't sleep, so I'm going to give the higher dose a whirl.

I read some of those reviews and something puzzles me.

My understanding is that the lower the doze the higher the sedative effect.

In some reviews people start @15/30mg, are wiped out and they LOWER the sedation by CUTTING the pill in 2,4, even 8 pieces, which is inconsistent. Others double the doze to increase sedation.

So, if the initial doze does not work hiw do you know what to do -- cut or double???????

My pills were 15 mg and I cut them in half and took 7.5 mg. That helped me sleep but I was too groggy during the day so discontinued using it and went back to Trazodone. I would ask your pharmacist or Dr for the lowest dose pill available so it's easier to cut in half and start with less and see if that helps with sleep without daytime sleepiness.

It's hard enough to deal with insomnia without pain, let alone with it. The question here is whether sedation effect is negatively or positively correlated with doze -- does sedation increase or decrease with higher doze?
If it varies by person it's hard to decide.

You can try 30 and if does not help, try 7.5.

Sounds logical, although with meds -- part. psych ones -- logic does not always work.
