Dr. Richard Zimmerman at the Mayo Clinic Arizona campus and Dr. John Atkinson in Rochester each have a special interest in this condition.
Thank you. Is there one that you would recommend over the other I live in Florida so it doesn't matter where I travel to. I just want the best. I am 49 and been dealing with this at mayo Jacksonville for 10 years. I feel like I need a second opinion and would like it to come from someone that specializes in the condition.
Does anybody know the truth about surgery for hemifacisl spasms? I've been getting Botox injections for 3 years to treat the symptoms, but they are not terribly effective. The Dr who administers the injections has told me such horror stories about the surgery that I'm worried he may be correct. The neurosurgeon I saw says just the opposite ( no surprise!). Any advice or suggestions?
Hi @rickw52, welcome to Connect.
I moved your message to this thread so that you can read the messages from other Connect members and be in touch with @jdkc4143.
@rickw52, I understand that the surgery is not suitable for many patients. Did the neurosurgeon say that the surgery could alleviate the symptoms in your case? I would want to know from him what conditions make you "eligible" for the surgery.
HI,
I had the surgery. At first I thought it was 100% successful then some of the symptoms came back. I have to say I am so happy I did go ahead with it because I am about 70% symptom free. I can smile again.
Good luck
Hey @jdkc4143, welcome back. Thanks for the update. I can't imagine not being able to smile. Glad that you're able to do that again.
Hi
I had the surgery 2 years ago and even though it was not 100% successful it has changed my life. I woke up almost symptom free. My only regret is that I did not do it sooner.
Recovery is quick and easy. Good luck
