Echolight sonogram scan for bones

Posted by csday @csday, Jan 8, 2022

Has anyone heard of, or had an Echolight sonogram scan instead of a radiation DEXA scan? New FDA approved that has been used in Europe for awhile. https://www.echolightmedical.com/en/company/

Hello, I am hearing more and more about the use of echo light scans to ensure better accuracy in determining t-scores and bone density quality. Does Mayo Clinic provide these scans?

Welcome @petey911, I moved your question about echo light scans, or radiofrequency echographic multi spectrometry (REMS), to this existing discussion so you can connect with other members on the same topic.

Here is an article from Mayo Clinic discussing advances in endocrinology regarding osteoporosis and predicting risk of fracture, ie, high-resolution peripheral quantitative computerized tomography (HRpQCT) imaging and trabecular bone score (TBS).

I am hoping that there will be a facility that has Echolight in California soon. It sounds like it is available in Seattle, New York, North Carolina and Texas.

I haven't heard of that, @csday. Do you know if the results of the Sonogram conflict with the dexa scan results? The trabecular bone score (TBS) is supposed to give a more accurate reading as it focuses on bone quality, not quantity, but I don't know where that is available and would love to hear from anyone who had one.

There are two places in NC.

I had a Echolight (REMS) procedure performed. I was quite surprised at the results. My DEXA scan in April/22, showed my spine overall score was -2.8, my hips were -2.1 and -2.3.

The Echolight was done twice and the results were averaged. My spine overall spine was -2.2, with a fragility in the average bone category, meaning less chance of fracture. My hips were a surprise with the first scan reading -2.8 and the second reading -2.9 (for both hips). And the fragility score was slightly less than average with a slight risk of fracture. The scores seem to be reversed from my DEXA scan. Although, my DEXA did not have the TBS software to calculate strength as the Echolight did. I will have a consult with the dr. in 2 weeks to go over my results and what they mean for me.

Why was the echo done twice.?Which one is correct? Echo or DEXA?

Are there multiple locations in the USA for the echolight?

@csday

I heard of the Echolight scan from Dr Susan Brown of Better Bones
I found a clinic in Asheville NC
StrengthX 828-505-7200
My echolight scan was very close to my previous dexa It showed my bone strength as strong even though my density is at risk.

Is it covered by insurance?

TBS is software in the same machine as the DEXA scan done at the same time. The DEXA is covered. The TBS is not. It's $50

Does anyone know where you can get this testing done! Echo-light

You could google Echolight. Others have posted here on REMS. Anything that doesn't increase the radiation load might reduce MD's hesitancy to order BMD scans--the lack of which hampers research--is a great thing!
